*This book was sent to me via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*
The angels, the ghouls, and everything in between. I loved it. I also love a badass mc and this one really did for me.

Wow I loved this book. Lets make a list, shall we?

Why did I love it? Is it:
a. that Myla is an awesome warrior heroine who beats up evil souls for fun? (and is awesome at it BTW)
b. the fact that she literally lives in Purgatory? (I mean I know most high schoolers think they go to Purgatory High, but she literally has a class on worm-soufflé and massaging gouls' feet... EW)
c. the fact she's hilarious/sassy? (watching her fly off the handle is one of my favorite things)
d. the fact that she has an awesome, deadly demon tail that is self-aware?
e. or the not-cheesy, super-cute romance?

Ding Ding Ding! Yes. It was secret answer (f) all of the above! Plus amazing world building and a cast of rational, active characters.

I hate it when characters are dumb just to move the plot along. You know, when they don't act like any sane individual would, so that the author can spin a better story? Well that doesn't happen here! High-five!

Our main character is Myla, a quasi—which is a part demon, part human—who would rather spend her time fighting evil souls in The Arena, than roaming the halls of Purgatory High. For the most part, she gets her wish since she's part wrath demon (each demon/quasi gets their power from one of the seven deadly sins, or in her case two, which is super cool) and that means she's uber talented at fighting.

She has a best friend, Cissy, who's inner envy demon makes her annoying at times, but for the most part she's a loyal support system since Myla's life is kinda on its hinges. Myla doesn't know who her father is, or what happened to her mother during/before the war when quasi rule in Purgatory was overthrown by the gouls and Armageddon, the king of Hell.

Her mother, by the way, is a jittery, overly cautious, mass of nerves with a secret past. You can imagine how her daughter risking life and limb in the Arena is great for her considering the whole basket-case vibe. Add the fact that her daughter loves the Arena and has an inner wrath demon to boot, and you have a crappy family dynamic.

As far as the love story goes, I thought Lincoln was yummy. They had a great dynamic and an interesting build up to their relationship; the whole thing was a sweet, slow burn. They fit so well together, I was almost as "on cloud nine" as the pair of them were when everything finally clicked.

Adair. Now there's a name that makes me wanna punch someone.

I hated her so freaking much (although I'm writing this having read the second book where she becomes infinitely more annoying, so you may not feel quite as strongly by the end as I do now). She seems to have mistaken Lincoln for a fire hydrant and thinks that now she's peed on him and he's her property. Aka: she's the brattiest of all brats.

All in all this was an excellent story. I do think it could have used a better editing process, or maybe another comb over by Bauer after she'd set it aside for a while, and could look with fresh eyes. It wasn't bad, it just could have been "great" and it ended up being "really good."

I picked up the second in the series right away and definitely recommend that you do as well, reader, because in a rare turn for series books, this story did get even better in the second book. I'm on to the third now, and haven't regretted a moment yet.

It's an easy, entertaining, highly creative read.

This reminds me of Underworld x Ultraviolet kind of vibes. If the box office returns of those movies are any indicator, it also has similar themes and success for me about this book.

You know the part where the story is not really new new but when you listen or when you read it, you are still surprised by the turn or events or how the characters were built? Yeah, I got that from this book

It's pretty awesome overall, there were just some weird transitions that I can't get over with BUT it was still a pleasant story to listen into

Cute and cheeky. Childish at times, and completely stupid internal monologue, but still adorable.

Engaging, action packed, hilarious

This book had me laughing so much. The teenage sassy back talk was at 100%. Strong, kick butt heroines are my favorite - especially when they have attitude.

Eh. This book was nothing special. It's not like most paranormal/supernatural books out there but it was still kinda boring and laggy. Also, I don't approve of the romance. There was an insta-love thing going on, and although it was because the main character had some sort of lust demon inside her, I still don't like it. And then they fell in love after seeing each other a few times. Ugh.
Also, the side characters sucked. The best friend was a horrible and all the other characters were boring. Except Walker, I liked him.

Really loved this book. Wasn't expecting a hidden gem but found one! If you're a fan of a snarky female character in a fantasy genre book then this is one for you. Picked it up when it was free on iBooks.

The cover looks stunning and made me stop scrolling and request an ARC. I received this audiobook from NetGalley, and I was excited to listen to it because I knew the author narrated it. Who knows better than the author how to portray the characters?

For the most part, she did a fantastic job. My only objection is Myla's mother. I understand the author tries to give each character a unique voice, but she tries too hard. I cringed every time I heard Myla's mother speak. The author was not trying to mock the mother, but it came across that way and was a bit irksome.

The story
Myla is a half-demon, half-human hybrid. Wrath is her deadly sin, making her an excellent fighter. Myla is a resident of Purgatory. Despite being a demon, her mother is terrified of her own shadow and acts more like a skittish kid. She attends school and battles in the Arena. She damns souls to hell (while her mother cowers flinchingly with her hands clasped to her ears).

Quasi-demons have traits inspired by biblical sins. Myla’s is Wrath (with a secret side of Lust), and her best friend Cissy is Envy, for example (and that shows throughout the novel).

Purgatory High's classes are...fascinating and focused on best serving their ghoul masters, and I had a lot of fun reading about their curriculum.

The characters

Most of them are well-rounded and thoughtfully crafted. Myla is a tough kickass character, but she’s a little too perfect. I love her strong, but I wanted her to be vulnerable too. As perfect and as unbreakable as she is, it’s hard to relate to her.

The love story

Since everyone hates demons, the relationship between Myla and Lincoln, the self-righteous Thrax prince, is scandalous at best. So it was fun to watch it happen, even though they went from hate to love pretty fast.

One thing that is liked about this book was Mayla. She was fun and entertaining and kick ass. But that's pretty much it. The romance was trying I'm honestly surprised I haven't seen it in any of the reviews that I read. It was the most instant romance I have ever read.
