This was too “at your face” and lacked subtlety. Also could be half the length.
Amazing idea and a disappointing execution.

An appropriate, if not more literal, October read about a girl practicing witchcraft in the modern age being transported via the ether to visit Geillis Duncan, who was accused and convicted of witchcraft in 1591 before being hanged.
Iris comes to her on the day of her execution and seeks the truth behind what happened to Geillis and sadly informs her how things have changed little 430 years on.
This is a short book, but there are signs of what would come to constitute a decent crime story within the account of what happened to Geillis happening hundreds of years before it become a bestselling genre and there is a tragedy to how things have evolved so slowly over centuries in terms of equality where even now we still live in a society that blames victims and casts them down.
If this and [b:Rizzio|57147033|Rizzio|Denise Mina|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1613919449l/57147033._SX50_.jpg|89440688] are anything to go by then this series should prove illuminating in how informative the past is to the world we still live in today.

This. Fucking. Book. Put me through a whirlwind of emotions and had me torn between wanting to shelter Geillis and undo everything the world did to her at the same time of being ready, torch in hand to burn it all down right there with her. Powerful and so so moving.

Geillis looks utterly tiny as she steps up onto the platform next to the gallows. They have to lift her up under her armpits to place her head in the noose, the way her father would so she could pick apples off the trees as a child.
Heart-wrenchingly beautiful, and profoundly sad.
