I really enjoyed this new addition to the Nora Kelly series!
The book was action packed and the mystery of High Lonesome, a ghost town near the White Sands National Park was thrilling to read. This book took place in New Mexico and I really enjoyed the rugged landscape for the setting.
The Scorpion's Tail starts off with the local sheriff seeing someone digging at High Lonesome. He goes to investigate and the treasure hunter tries to kill Sheriff Homer Watts.
What the treasure hunter doesn't understand is this is the wrong type of sheriff to shoot at!
A gun battle happens and Sheriff Watts gets his man. Watts goes to investigate on what's being dug up and discovers a mummified corpse!
High Lonesome is on federal land so the FBI ends up getting involved with this case.
Agent Corrie Swanson gets the throwaway case of the mummified corpse.
Since Corrie is in a bit of hot water with her supervisor, she knows she needs to do a good job on the case, regardless if it goes anywhere.
She sweet talks Nora Kelly into being the archaeologist to excavate the body.
Nora Kelly has a hard time saying no to a mysterious archaeology dig, so she relents and says she'll dig up this mummy!
Corrie and Nora have no idea of the type of mysteries and deadly situations that they're about to get involved in with this investigation.
The Scorpion's Tail was highly entertaining and fun to read!
The mystery of the dead body along with a possible hidden treasure are only a few tidbits to this thrilling plot.
The plot has the feel of an Indiana Jones movie about it, along with throwing in some conspiracy theories and High Noon battles.
I loved the new character of Sheriff Homer Watts! I want more of this character in books to come.
I also loved seeing Nora Kelly's brother, Skip get involved in the action and make smart decisions in this book.
And yes, you even get a cameo appearance of our beloved
I realized how much I missed this character while reading these chapters, and can't wait to read the next book in that series!
I really like how the book ends with Nora Kelly's character and the questions that she has with her career and life. I'm excited to see what type of adventures and archeology mysteries that she will get involved with in the future!
Highly recommend this book and series if you enjoy action adventure plots, great characters and exciting mysteries to solve!
Start with Thunderhead if you can!

Special Agent Pendergast.I realized how much I missed this character while reading these chapters, and can't wait to read the next book in that series!

Pulpy archaeology thriller, far-fetched yet tied up neatly in a bow. Exactly what I wanted after reading several heavy non-fiction books. The Prendergast series is getting a bit played out, but these characters are still interesting (though Corrie's attitude makes her existence as an FBI agent a little unbelievable, but still).
I really enjoy their style of writing. Fast paced, fun, adventure galore. I’ve come to know and love the characters. Already looking forward to the next one. It will be a while.
Man I LOVE me some Preston & Child. I first fell in love with Pendergast and crew in "Relic" and have continued ever since. I love the addition of Corrie to the gang.
The southwest US setting continues to be solid gold. This latest book takes us through the twists and turns of canyons, across the white desert sands, and back in the history of the bloody Native/Spanish/US relationship. Corrie shoulders this story with help from Nora (and of course an appearance from Pendergast himself). A great, suspenseful read and a great way to kick off 2021!

Interesting story, but the misogynist assholery was way over the top... and pretty much screamed, 'this is one of the 'bad guys!'
It's possible that this series will never be as good as a Pendergast book because they don't have a character as strong as Pendergast. There is also the change in theme to archeology which involves lots of dirt, caves, and history, which while the authors try to make seem really interesting it never is as interesting as the mysteries on Pendergast books. That doesn't mean these are bad, I think they will always be quick easy decent reads, but I don't think they will ever be anything great. This one is the same. Dirt, history, lots of dialogue, action, conclusion. I thought Corrie would stand out more as a solid lead. She's believable and relatable snarky yet taking things seriously, that leads to her being somewhat blander than I'd expect, but I do enjoy her more than Nora. Regardless, I'm in for this series, make as many of them as you'd like. More dirt!
Preston and Child. Well they did it again. The second of the Nora Kelly/Corrie Swanson series hit the mark. Just like the Pendergast series I hope that this one continues. The way these series are written can easily draw the reader in, pushing them to try to finish the book within a day or two of picking it up. Took me a bit longer this time but good reads are fun to come by and sometimes need to be drawn out more. I look forward to reading more from this series.
