The ending was predictable with nothing really new and interesting. A disappointment from these authors. Oh--and Pendergast showing up to explain the mystery didn't help.
I love these books. They are my go-to comfort novels and I devoured this one as well. I still love Nora and I'm still lukewarm on Corrie. But, I love the story, the history and the twists. Another one that kept me up late wanting to read.

Okay, I'm definitely a fan of this series. I was a little concerned when I first started this series because it's always challenging when authors decide to write a spin-off from a wildly popular and successful series, but after reading this second book, I think they've done a solid job and I'm going to end up enjoying it.
I also love that this series seems to take place in the southwest, mainly in NM, which is where my husband grew up. I love that area of the US and I love how they incorporate the setting into the area.
I thought I knew Nora and Corie's characters pretty well from their introductions in the Pendergast books, but I love that their characters have continued to grow and develop into more interesting people. They each make mistakes, but they also have people who call them on them and I love that they are neither capitulating their own wants and needs, but they're taking what works for them into consideration.
A couple of things: I loved it when Pendergast showed up at the end of the first book, but audio narrator's voice just didn't work for his voice. I'm used to Scott Brick or Rene Auberjonois speaking his voice, and that's part of it. But the woman's voice just doesn't fit for who he has become for me. But it was fun having him appear. However, in this one...I am hoping he doesn't show up at end of every book to clear up some mystery that Nora and Corie could not figure out. Because for me, that will eventually ruin for me all that Nora and Corie accomplish on their own or together with each other. It'll feel like they're unable to solve everything without his help. And that's not who I see in either of them, for all that Pendergast was Corie's mentor. Ultimately, I want them to get to the point where they can stand on their own. Ah well, we shall see where it goes. I am still really enjoying this series and am looking forward to diving into the third one!

It would have been 4 if it wasn't for the guest appearance at the end, conveniently wrapping everything up.

I enjoy the books by these authors, definitely some more than others. As someone born and raised in New Mexico, I appreciated learning some more history about our beautiful state. However, I was put off by the often unnecessarily unflattering descriptions of places here.
The story was entertaining enough, despite the authors' tendency to overuse pedestrian phrases and colloquial language. I also found the ending to be absurd, with a completely unnecessary appearance by a character from the authors' other books.

As with almost all of their books, it's the "journey, not the destination" that draws me in. Reading through the adventure is the fun part and the denouement is rarely anything but a time to think about what book i'll be reading next.
Spoilerey-bit:
I am a bit frustrated that Pendergast swoops in the save the day in both of the books in this series so far. I mean I love the character, he's one of my favorites! But why is he here?? Why can't Corey just be allowed to solve the puzzle herself? There must be a reason.

I really enjoyed this book. I have always enjoyed Preston and Child books. I have already preordered the next book and I can’t wait.
