THIS BOOK WAS SO GOOD. I don’t even know what about it was so unputdownable but I stayed up past midnight last night to finish it. And I usually fall asleep at like nine thirty. You don’t have to have read The Dry or Force of Nature but you really should, especially The Dry. My favorite of hers is still The Lost Man (which doesn’t have anything to do with these) but there is just something about this book that was sooooo good!! #engelbrechtreads2023 #engelbrechtreads

I love Jane Harper. Her books are really atmospheric and I don't mind the slow unraveling. But... it took me a LONG time to get through this one. There were a lot of characters - I honestly kept losing track of who was who. And while the twist at the end was surprising, it didn't match the long buildup.
All that said, I'll still read anything Jane Harper writes.

This was a slow burn, but I appreciated how close it made me feel to the characters. The simple charm of their community and the closeness they all had, it all made the mystery (technically two of them) more appealing.
