This was a 5 star book up until that last chapter. I’m still processing the ending. I am so conflicted about it and its a shame since the rest of the book was amazing.

Man, what an ending. I'm convinced that ending is responsible for my one-month slump. Why did it have to end that way?! This was such a fantastic series--the characters, the world-building, politics, commentary on religion, the parallels with the current political climate. Great characters: Kelsea with her headstrongness, deep moral principles, ruthlessness that she knew when to reign back, all culminating in a lot of growth; her Guard which I grew to love, especially the Mace, and their undying loyalty to Kelsea; other side characters such as Father Tyler, Isa, etc. I even started to enjoy Kelsea's dip into the past. And I had a bad feeling that the ending would take this direction,
but I was still hopeful we would stay in the same world. I understand this is the story the author wanted to tell, that to truly improve everything would have to be scrapped at the beginning to avoid the monarchy, but I felt to empty when Kelsea opened her eyes in a different Tearling and no one knew her
. I got very attached to the characters and the world, yes. I'm going to put off reading the prequel for now, this feeling is still too fresh. Oh, what could've been!

Phenomenal series.

This series was enjoyable and kept my attention, but the end felt anticlimactic and flat. Kinda like "what was the point?"

Without spoiling, the ending was a disappointment. I should have researched this before I began the first book.

3.5 stars.

Ending felt a little abrupt compared with the rest of the series.

I made the mistake of having a week or two where I didn't read, making the end feel especially disjointed from the rest of the book and the series. I felt like things got a little muddled near the end; some characters are never resolved and, as sometimes happens, it felt like a race to the finish. It was a creative ending, just not especially satisfying to me. I also struggled, in this book and #2, with the really heavy-handed opposition to religion...I found myself at parts saying, "okay, we get it, you think organized religion is the worst possible thing in the world," or so it felt at times. I don't like when any fiction book starts to feel like it's pushing agenda, so at times I found this annoying and distracting.

I thought this was a pretty solid conclusion to the series.  The writing is solid and the characters feel fully fleshed.  I mean, if I could feel empathy for the Red Queen I think that's some suitable depth of characterization!

It was so rewarding to finally see all the post-Crossing history finally laid bare.  I also liked that the author didn't shy away from portraying ALL of the characters as flawed.  Frankly, it just makes them more interesting for their humanity.

I'd be interested in reading more of the Tearling - after all, what is the deal with the sapphires anyway?!

That ending.. I am not okay.
Such a good last book for the series, so glad I decided to start this series again and actually finish it this time, even if I am almost 10 years late!
