This has great insights on preparing for your own death. Comments about her grandchildren not being able to write thank you letters was not for me.

This book is less how to and more memoir. I guess you can view it as inspiration for cleaning if you’d like. I think the sentiment to clean before you die is a good one.

However this lost some points for me when she decided to put down an older dog (with no mention of any illnesses) because her family was moving and didn’t think they could find a suitable home for it. Just seems bonkers that a) that happened in the first place and b) it got through the editing stage.

Also some weird rant about “young people these days” being unable to write? This was all in the last 20% of the book of so

Lovely read. I’m young and I already live a pretty minimalistic lifestyle (by choice or by finances? Idk), but this was still a lot of great tips and tricks on de-cluttering your life. This was in general written for those who are older, as it talks a lot about preparing for life for others after you pass away, but in a light and kind way. It’s also kind of memoir-y which a lot of people apparently didn’t like in the reviews, but I found entertaining.
Funny and quirky writing style overall.
I also enjoyed the emphasis on recycling, donating, etc. your old stuff rather than just immediately going for the dumpster!

The only qualm I had was she seems a bit out of touch occasionally with the “younger” generation (anything gen x and younger).

I think this book would be useful for a certain type of person - its intended audience of older people with a normal amount of lifetime stuff accumulation that is all basically clean and organized already (at least by broad categories) who need to downsize or reduce their belongings.

This book is not intended for (and in fact, I believe, would be very discouraging to) someone who seriously needs to majorly declutter in order to just function on a basic level. The author does sometimes come across as mildly inflexible and unrelatable in her methods and lifestyle. While she seems like an extremely effective and efficient person, and I applaud her for that, I do not think her methods would work for just anyone or even a majority of real life situations.

Well, it’s not quite as practical as I was hoping but the memoir parts were entertaining and it IS motivating me to let go of more stuff with the intention of not leaving it for my kids to do when I’m gone. Mind you, I hope I still have a lot of time left but if I don’t love it and I’m not using it, why do I hang onto it? LET IT GOOOO!!
