This is one of the best books I have ever read, it’s everything I could’ve asked for going into it and more. I was hooked in every single page and always wanted to know what was coming next. I fell in love with all of these characters and was so deeply invested in what happened to them and it just made this novel so great. Overall, just an absolutely amazing story and I couldn’t recommend more!

This felt unnecessarily long (950 pages is crazy). There was parts that were so good and had me frantically turning the page but there was also a lot of… nothing. Some of the themes felt very heavy handed (you’re either GOOD or EVIL!!). It lost me a bit in the last 1/3 of the book, but overall I did enjoy it.

Fresh off the last page, giddy laughter still echoing through the living room, i am writing this to remember (at least until i read it again) the feeling of hope this, admittedly dark and gruesome novel, gave me; post-book euphoria exists and i am given over to it. read this book, absorb it, write in it, holler across the balcony at your neighbors about, then look me in the eye and tell you don’t think you could run out the door right this second and do anything you put your mind to.

truly one of the most beautiful reading experiences of my life, running the gambit from devastating loss through dehumanizing and gruesome body horror to a young romance and revival of hope after the apocalypse, this is one my friends and family are going to get tired of hearing about, no doubt.

Wow! I flew through these 900 pages, carving out a few free minutes to read it every chance I got. And I was thinking about it ALL THE TIME. And still am. The characters are amazing and the storyline flows.

There were bits I didn't care for and thought should have been edited out. So it's not perfect and I wouldn't call it an amazing piece of literature, but it's a great book. I loved it and was obsessed when I was reading it. Definitely a 5-star read!

I haven’t figured out exactly why I enjoyed this book as much as I did. I just know I got it on audio to listen to while walking my dog and I found myself taking her on longer and longer walks.

An interesting take on a nuclear apocalypse.

I really enjoyed the beginning of the book, where we see what actions were taken and what decisions were made by the people in charge that led to the nuclear exchange. Usually post apocalyptic books skip that entirely, so it was a refreshing change.

The story bounces around between several characters, so you get a good point of view from each side. Unlike some books that have a bunch of side stuff pushed in just to pad the story, this book doesn't. Everything is meant to advance the plot, even if it doesn't happen until 300 pages later.

Unfortunately despite the good, I couldn't rate the book 5 stars for a couple of reasons. The author introduces magic into the book, and it's hardly ever used, and then just by three characters, even though others show signs of being able to do so as well. Even when it is used, it is used sparingly. On top of that a fantastic magical artifact is created, and then hardly anything is done with it, nor is it's creation really explained. The author hints at plenty, but that's it. Either make it more important, or don't add it in at all.

Then on top of that the author sets the entire ending of the book up so it's not really an ending, and hints at a sequel that is never to come. Instead of a fantastic ending, we get a sub par ending that is reminiscent of 80s horror movies setting up for a possible sequel that never comes.

Despite all of that, it is still a book worth picking up.
