Espero no decepcionarme

*This is a review for the first volume only and not for the entirety of the series, as I believe that the series deserves to have a ‘volume to volume’ review in its own right*
I picked this book up in a local bookstore after having wrap up reading the first part of Chainsaw Man in early 2022. Having enter into this series with the impression that it had the same absurdist and macabre humor, strong female characters, and over the top borderline seinen violence. I was significantly surprised to find some of those aspects, but drastically cranked up to eleven. The amount of action and gore in the first few pages are absolutely stunning - especially in physical copy. Full with bite size guts and carnage, but not as explosive as the next volumes, it offers readers an inviting palette to look forward.
In terms of the themes, it carries around the Fujimoto staple (later representative in his future works) of questioning being and existence within the lenses of existentialism and nihilism. Albeit, significantly toned down to a few pages of symbolic representation within the struggles each character faces and the nature setting they’re forced to live in. This is more evident when we take into account religious symbolism with messiah like imagery.
One of the more promising plots offered by the book, is it’s take on a plethora of taboo subjects. The book does not dictate readers what to believe, what’s right or wrong, but rather offer them avenues in formulating their own opinion on the subject matter - regardless of how grotesque or immoral it maybe.
Being Fujimoto’s first major breakthrough in the industry, Fire Punch remains true to his craft without pulling any punches. Reminiscent to his later works, his foray into the human condition becomes a reflection of not only within a physical sense, but also framed within philosophical, ethical, religious and political themes. Although, catering to a more adult centric audience. Fire Punch remains to be a must read - not only fans of Chainsaw Man - but also for would-by readers of a story set in a post-apocalyptic landscape where in a man in flames is seen to be some christlike figure.

Fire punch is an experience. A completely insane experience.
This is the type of story/manga that I could see being used in a classroom setting to pick apart symbolism and themes, where much is obvious but some lurks under the surface.
It's violent, visceral, and deals with some heavy topics.
I would recommend to any who can comfortably handle M+ content, borderline absurdist storytelling, and/or those struggling with existential debates.

This book was uh, okay, I guess. Definitely not pulling any punches with this one. Wayyyyy weirder than anyone in their right mind would have wrote. Characters are weird, story is weird, setting is interesting, main character design is badass. 3.5/5

How do you recommend a book that is so bleak, twisted and yet fascinating to read.
Fire Punch is an experience, if you are up for it that is. It feels like the manga version of The Road crossed with X-Men.
