Jesus. Ok.

Let’s address the elephant in the room first.
The plot twist was…a plot twist. It couldve been hinted more, but it wasn’t. I also think it could’ve worked better if this book was written in 3rd person limited, and not first person. Jovie literally not saying anything about a potential assassination until right before the very scene, and suddenly having Beau in on it?? Terrible.

The first chapter did not pull me in. It felt like I was dropping into the middle of a conversation, with little to no context to what was happening. I found myself closing my kindle and doing other things within the first few pages.

The chapters with them stuck on a boat together were the best parts, in my opinion. I enjoyed Jovie and Acker’s conversations here, and honestly I was expecting more scenes on boats/in the ocean before I started reading, but most of the book is on land.

Acker is definitely not my favorite love interest. He started out really good until they got to the military encampment, and then he just had the personality of every other romantasy mmc. He intentionally kept secrets from Jovie and got mad when she found them out. When she told him she didnt like being paraded around the city and embarrassed in fron of his father, he said something along the lines of “we all have it bad, its not just you” and like??? What the hell

The first kiss scene was not it. It made me uncomfortable. She did not want it at first and I hate that she started to accept it after she realized she was horknee for him. It did not feel romantic at all.

The last 40% of the novel focuses on the romance. Found myself getting bored by the time they actually fucked. I do not care for schmex scenes if i already hate the character beforehand, so I skimmed most of it and the other scene afterwards in the library, but what I saw of it, he went inside her with no preparation first? Be for real

I feel like im supposed to hate Acker’s betrothed and i just dont. She’s done nothing wrong besides being in an arranged betrothal and getting cheated on. Girlie deserved better than being embarrassed in front of the entire dining room near the end. Acker was a dick for that

The plot was intriguing when they were still on the boat. Thats all I gotta say. I wont be reading the next book because I just dont care.

Did not expect to enjoy this that much. I go into most books blind, and this was no exception. Real mental gymnastics for this one, in the best way. Could have used a bit more world building in the beginning, I spent a bit of time rereading/feeling like I was trying to catch up, but it got SO GOOD as it went on! Cannot wait for the next one.

I forced myself to finish this book. I was enjoying it up until the end. There are lots of reviews that recommend this book based on the twist that it has. I do not think that twist was well executed, and it made me angry and unsure if this is a series that I would want to continue.
