I was in such a slump before this book, and it completely brought me back to life. I absolutely loved it!
This review is so hard to write without spoilers, so I will try to keep it short by saying that I loved Acker and Brynn, and Messer was my favorite side character.
And that the rage I felt at the end hurt so bad, but felt so good.

TL;DR : The lack of professional editing is blatantly obvious and negatively impacts on a genuinely good story idea.
There are so many basic, basic errors that the urge to take a red pen to this book was incredible. I question whether this book was professionally edited at all. I’m so sorry to all the indie authors out there hustling so hard 😞
One of the only consistencies in the book was the inconsistencies. Is X alive or dead… well our FMC knows X is alive because two pages before she had proof of it. There’s no bath water, flip the page the bath has water in it. What are papers about all of a sudden? Please, PLEASE, how did it get so far!?
The short chapters are incredibly annoying and just plain pointless. It reads like the author believes that the reader can’t maintain attention long enough to read a long chapter.
🚨 Spoilerish from here on!!!
Messer’s storyline is complex and well thought out. I would have liked more of Messer as I thoroughly enjoyed his character and missed him when he just disappeared.
I am not at all keen on the MMC Acker, and was suss on him from the beginning. The non-consensual intimacy, his manipulation and guilting of Brynne on and off out of the blue, his anger at her for not accepting him because he’s done all of this stuff for her (kill people, rescue her, etc). He saved her because, “My people need your return for peace.” His own sister Beau, “We are all merely at the mercy of Acker’s will.” I didn’t like him as a character, but I don’t think we’re supposed to? (Tamlin vibes✨)
The twist was foreshadowed throughout the entire book, so I wasn’t really surprised by what happened, however I hadn’t connected the motivations behind it all. But it did make sense and that was really very well thought out. Even if what Acker did is inconsistent with everything he’d done and said to that point.
I won’t recommend the book because I believe we should not be supporting books that are pumped out in this unfinished state BUT I’ll be reading the second book and hoping it has a professional editor because I want to know how it ends.

5⭐️’s.. I read this book in one sitting. I was hooked from the first chapter. I kept hearing from people how it ended with a shocking twist of a cliffhanger and apparently no one could have ever predicted it and that is very true! This will be a duology series. There isn’t an exact date yet for the second book but rumor has it that it will be much longer than the first (yay) and possibly coming out end of 2025 or early 2026. I can’t wait!!
