Obviously inspired by Catcher in the Rye as well as other nihilist novels.
I enjoyed it but mostly because I enjoyed Catcher and love No Longer Human and Flowers or Buffoonery.
Almost no one in the story was good it nice, least if all the protagonist.

Another BookTok rave of the twisted and depravity of the male mind. I found this book at a thrift store and figured I would try it out. I gritted my teeth through the narrator’s adventure through alcohol addiction in the first part of the book, and pushed through until I found the adventure of a professional being relocated to the midwest of the state of Minnesota. I’m not gonna lie, reading the adventures of being stuck in the freezing Midwest had me laughing out loud and found me sympathizing with our narrator (made me wonder if I am an oxygen thief as well). However, the third act completely threw away any respect I had for the middle act which I thought saved the whole book. I was not crafty and edgy enough to appreciate the third act but it did demonstrate the brutality of the karma cycle.

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

Possibly the most boring book I've ever tried to read. Unsurprised the writer has decided to remain anonymous. I would also be embarrassed to attach my name to something like this.

idk what the author was trying to say with this but I ATE IT UP.

“I liked hurting girls. Mentally, not physically…The thing is, I got off on it. I really enjoyed it. It’s like when you hear serial killers say they feel no regret, no remorse for all the people they killed. I was like that. Loved it. I didn’t care how long it took either, because I was in no hurry. I’d wait until they were totally in love with me. I loved the shock on their faces. Then the glaze as they tried to hide how much I was hurting them. And it was legal.”

Um, aca-scuse me dude? This was so icky, my jaw dropped at least once every other page. The narrator treats women so terribly throughout this book and is absolutely disgusting when discussing his personal motivations and values. He is so self-absorbed and paranoid it’s actually nuts. And when a girl finally has the audacity to do something similar to him, he’s butthurt about it! Like pick a side, holy.

On another note, I listened to this as an audiobook and definitely think it helped enhance the reading experience. If I physically read it I think I would’ve DNFed it because I have no idea how I could’ve forced myself through it otherwise.

(Side note: if I found out my ex read this and took notes I would not be surprised.)

Not boring enough to be unnoteworthy; not outrageous enough to be meaningful

Absolute garbage. It's just a misogynistic man believing that because he'd finally gone sober for 5 years that he should've been set. He acts betrayed but mildly accepting of a woman hurting him immensely after hurting so many in his life. He acts like he's won by publishing this book. There's some weird amounts of self awareness of why he's this way but brushes it off since he's sober. It's all around a very very annoying read. Nothing really worth talking about. The only thing interesting about it was that it's anonymous, if it wasn't I'd care even less.

i tired to read this once, got 50 pages in and gave up. This time i was determined to finish and did so in about 3.5 hours, with a few breaks in between. I could easily write a 151 page response dissecting the 151 pages in this book but honestly can probably sum it up better in less. Also the three stars are more of a reflection of how annoyed and disgusted this book made me feel versus anything else.

It was confusing to follow at times- but the train of thought jumping around was relatable honestly. The author/narrator was a jackass, obviously. It’s a good book to read if you need a reality check. People are shitty, shitty things happen to both good and shitty people, some people wallow in their own self pity, alcohol is bad, getting over addiction is commendable, getting over alcohol addiction doesn’t make you a good person, etc etc. Dude was just honestly obsessed with himself and his own brain. I liked watching him get fucking humbled. It was sad and I did pity him. I pitied his childhood. But as an adult you make your own choices and I felt his karma was probably cosmically justified bc as he said in the first line of the book, he liked hurting women.
