As a historical drama, this book delivers. It’s exciting, there are a few good twists, and the character development is well-written if predictable. My only real issue reading this book was that it is clearly written by and for women. This obviously isn’t a bad thing in itself, but as a male reader, it very often felt as though the author was talking past me. Perhaps I’m just unaccustomed to women’s fiction. In any case, I would recommend this to people who like storm fiction.

I reached out to the publisher in March asking for an ARC of Chanel Cleeton’s (When We Left Cuba, Next Year in Havana) new book. They emailed me last week and sent me a version of it for my Kindle. While it is not my favorite Cleeton book, it was a really good read. In this story she brings to life 3 ladies in 3 different walks of life. The setting is in 1930s as one of the strongest hurricanes is set to hit Key West. Also it entangles the story of these three ladies over the course of the book. The book comes out at the beginning of June, and I highly recommend all of you add it it your TBR piles.

This is the third Chanel Cleeton novel I have read and it was my least favorite. There was a bit too much romance and not enough historical content given it’s an historical fiction book. But the bit of historical facts that are referenced are interesting and kept me reading.

Three different point of views - two were from women born and raised in the U.S. The third woman is a relative of the Perez family (I’m assuming this is a little bit of the background of the matriarch of the family.) I was hoping for more and I just got a trio that were a little too dependent on the men they were paired with and didn’t fully have any sort of plot to make this more engaging.

LOVED. LOVED. LOVED. This was a recent book club pick and my first Chanel Cleeton novel, and I’m obsessed. The historical aspects, the characters, the setting — there was nothing I didn’t enjoy about this read.

I loved all the women portrayed in this book, but was completely in love with Elizabeth (and her relationship with Sam). I didn’t want it to end — I felt all the storylines were so interesting and would love to know the next chapter of these women’s lives!
