I find myself torn about this book. For one thing, it is remarkable that Verne was able to write such an accurate account of submarine living. For another thing, though, I find myself wishing that ecology was more prevalent during Verne's time. I'm also a little disappointed by the characterization in the book, as Captain Nemo is as intriguing a character as ever, but Professor Arronax and his companions are extremely lacking in character. It's a good read, and I'm glad I revisited it, but the age of the book certainly shows.
Didn't actually finish it but spent most of February convincing myself it would get better! What a disappointment!

A better sea adventure than Moby Dick.
I enjoyed this book for the most part because it was an underwater pirate adventure searching for a monster similar to the premise of Moby Dick, but with actual plot and less outdated whale facts. There is so much in this book that is ingenious and stands out from the normal classic. I’d almost call this book a science-fiction with all the technology at the time almost futuristic. It’s well written and interesting to the last page.

So fun! I was a little confused by the title though; they don't actually go 20k leagues under the sea, rather, 20k leagues, while under the sea. For a while I was waiting for them to dive deeper, until I realized.

I think I would’ve loved this book if I’d been alive when it was first published. Oh to be an 1870s kid.
3.5 stars, mostly for the rootinest tootinest harpooninest Canadian to ever live. And also Conseil, who is undoubtedly gay for his master, who in turn is gay for Nemo. Who doesn’t love a good underwater love triangle?
