Way too much tell and not nearly enough show. Also, the female protagonist fell flat.

This book has been on my To Be Read list for a long time, and aside from the vampire element, it's not actually my usual fare. So when it came time to rad it, I wasn't sure how much I would actually enjoy it. I certainly didn't expect to fall head over heels for it (now I know how Charlotte feels about Karl!), but I did. Holy crap was it GOOD! I expected a story with a slower pace, and while this does have one, it also has a surprising amount of action, especially around the middle with a scene that left me gawking, "Wait, what?! That did NOT just happen!" The shock was so profound because I love the characters. Charlotte is not your typical heroine and I found myself relating a lot to her. And Karl? Karl might follow a few of the classic male vampire tropes (brooding, mysterious, and enigmatic), but he does them well and it never seems like he's a forced character. Their romance is a beautiful, dangerous thing in more ways than one. At first I worried they were moving too fast, but then I continued with the story and watched it grow past the habitual passion and lust. The vampire mythos is very unique and makes me want to know more about their world and what sort of powers they have. I was totally enthralled from start to finish and never felt it was too long, despite being a 500 page beast. I loved this book and absolutely recommend it to anyone looking for their fix of historical vampire romance. You won't be disappointed!

100 pages in and I am bored to death. The characters are flat, the dialogue wooden, and the author is all over the place with the language and references. No one has mentioned Kristian and the Crystal Ring which is some kind of other world for the vampires where they hibernate? Gain power? Lose power? Not entirely sure because it is convoluted passages and description and maddening as even the author doesn't seem to know what the heck it is.

I was hesitant when I was at the bookstore but sucked in by cover and premise. When I flipped to the middle of the book to see if it grabbed my attention, it was merely meh but again, premise ruled all.

Would only recommend to an enemy.

3.5 stars!! I’m having a hard time pinning down my feelings about this book. I went into this book thinking it would be some vampire trash but was pleasantly surprised that is was more than that. The prose is beautiful, but the plot sometimes dragged. I wanted more of the major conflict with the big bad and exploration of all the dope sciencey stuff and less family drama. I guess I’ll have to read the rest of the series for that haha. I also thought this version of vampirism was super interesting. All in all a fun and different read for me!

A bit disappointing, especially because it had such a strong beginning. I went into this expecting nothing, and the first hundred or so pages were so good I got my hopes up. And then came the instalove and I was like... seriously? This book is 500 pages long, the romance could easily have been a little more fleshed out. Also, it did drag a bit in the middle, it felt like the main character was just saying the same thing over and over again but nothing was actually happening. Other than that, I thought the world was really interesting and it's the main reason why I'm picking up the next book in this series.
