I want the sequel NOW! How dare Katharine McGee just... end the first book on such a HUGE cliffhanger.
But seriously -- a really fun read, and one of the best romances I've read in a while. McGee has clearly fleshed out the entire "alternate history" of America With A Monarchy, and tbh I would read a whole "history book" version of that! I want to know all about how the country evolved, what the different regions of the country are like (since they seem, right now, like giant counties that people are Dukes of, as opposed to states?), if McGee has envisioned an alternate world history as well because of the change... all sorts of things!
And then re: the book itself, I think the way the characters grow and mature over the course of the book is great, and I can't wait to see that continue in the sequel. I think that by focusing on FOUR VOICES there are a few things that get glossed over at times, but overall I was engrossed and had fun reading this. :)

Delightful, delicious, suspenseful, character-driven popcorn summer read. I got exactly what I wanted from this book. Will you find deeply complex plots and complicated character motivations? Gosh, no. But you will meet an endearing cast, a fascinating concept of an American monarchy, and sweet sweet teen romantic drama.

I enjoyed the story but the perspective switched between four different characters so it took me so long to get through because every chapter the story changed to the next person, even though they were still all entwined together.

Oh my God, I loved this book. From start to finish I loved it. I love the royals. I'm that American who has no business being so involved in their business, but I am. I love how distant it is from our own government so reading this I loved imagining we were in a world where we had royals. I'm a big Beatrice fan. I had friends who read it and didn't understand her, but I loved her. I could not imagine having that responsibility on your shoulders and being her age it puts things in perspective. I'd feel scared and stressed because you barely feel like an adult. Samantha gave me stress. She was spoiled and whiny, but she grew. She realized her world wasn't the only world and she didn't know what everyone else was going through. Nina would annoy me then I'd feel bad for her. I understood her being a Latina surrounded by white people and feeling like an outsider since you don't have the money or power others have. I still had higher hopes for her. I will say this about Daphne and just say I hated her. I could not stand her and every time she'd appear I'd want to skip past her. Nothing made her redeeming and I truly could not stand her. I don't think the second book will make her anymore redeeming, but we'll see.
Overall, I loved this book. I loved every detail and every moment (besides Daphne). Connor is beautiful and wonderful and so is Theo. Jeff and Ethan were okay, but I wish they weren't so far up Daphne's butt. She doesn't deserve them.

j'ai mis un millénaire a le lire mais c'était vraiment bien!!!! et du coup j'ai super hâte de lire la suite psk ca a un peu fini en cliffhanger donc vraiment hâte

Er zijn een aantal dingen waar ik een hele grote zwak voor heb. Drama is er daar absoluut een van. Verboden liefdesrelaties is er ook een van. En uiteraard alles wat maar met Royals te maken heeft. En na het lezen van de Duizend Hoog trilogie van McGee twijfelde ik er niet aan dat dit boek een combinatie ging worden van alledrie die elementen. Ik had er dan ook ongelooflijk veel zin in! Het duurde, het zal ook eens niet, alleen even voor ik daadwerkelijk tot lezen kwam.
Maar vanaf het moment dat ik dit boek vanochtend oppakte, zat ik er helemaal in en ik kreeg het boek met geen mogelijkheid weer weggelegd. Dit is het soort drama waar ik als lezer ongelooflijk gelukkig van wordt. Met name omdat het niet eens zozeer veroorzaakt wordt omdat de karakters dom zijn, maar omdat het daadwerkelijk veroorzaakt wordt door het leven in de spotlights, met alle gevolgen van dien.
Ik heb met name ongelooflijk genoten van alle verboden liefdesrelaties. McGee weet de chemie tussen de verschillende koppels echt ongelooflijk goed neer te zetten en met een paar zinnen weet ze een heel leven aan herinneringen en gedeeld leed en vreugd te schetsen. Ik was met name onder de indruk van de liefde tussen Beatrice en Connor. Die spatte echt van de pagina's af en hun pijn en verdriet was zo ongelooflijk voelbaar als lezer!
McGee weet als geen ander echt verhalen te schrijven die om de personages draaien. Actie-technisch gebeurt er niet eens heel veel, maar omdat we echt een inkijkje krijgen in het hoofd van deze karakters is echt elke pagina en elk hoofdstuk interessant. Zelfs Daphne begon langzaamaan steeds interessanter te worden, en dat vond ik ongelooflijk knap, want haar daden zijn nu niet bepaald gemaakt om sympathie op te roepen.
Wat het verhaal nog echter maakt, is dat McGee overduidelijk goed gekeken heeft naar de Europese koninklijke families die er nog wel zijn. Wat zijn hun protocollen? Wat voor schandalen zijn er in de afgelopen eeuwen allemaal geweest? Wat mag er wel en wat mag er niet? Als iemand die ook in ons eigen land wel een gezonde interesse in het koningshuis heeft, zaten er ongelooflijk veel herkenbare elementen in dit verhaal. Uiteraard heeft McGee er een passend Amerikaans sausje overheen gegooid.
