i’d spent a year thinking about how he broke that promise, when i should’ve been thinking about how selfish it was, after he’d left, to make him stay.

2.5 or so? compelling and addicting read but i was mildly to moderately irritated the whole way through. Competently written but afterwards it felt me felt kind of empty and like I did something wrong, like watch a particularly trashy reality tv show. I don't think this book has necessarily no substance but whatever it was trying to do is lost on me. I was too busy being annoyed at every single character in this. And yes sure the main character is "flawed" but it's more than that I think every single character that called her out on it (heavyhandedly) was just as bad. I simply wasn't convinced of anyones friendship with each other, which the book hinges on. Gonna keep this at 2 or change it to 3 when I see how much it stays with me.

DNF. Annoyingly unlikable lead character with toxic habits all over. Kept waiting for it to get exciting/better and it didn’t. Noped out in the middle of a page.

PROS

I like how the book was so easy to read and how the author incorporated text messages to show the friendships that Eve has with the small community in LA. I like how we explore to figure out where Ezra has gone, why he's been missing, and whether it's all in Eve's hands. Eve is trying to investigate her friend's disappearance, retracing his last steps, and if he ever gets found. I like the environment and setting in Los Angeles, exploring the restaurants, and getting to know all the people surrounding Eve.

CONS

It's fucked up the way that Eve keeps the secret from Ezra about being able to talk to their deceased friend, Miguel. Figuring out where Ezra has been pretty anti-climactic, but I don't even think the book is about him, it's more about Eve and the reader realizing how she has fucked up the friendships with the people that she loves the most. There are moments where Eve drinks and does a shit ton of drugs, just to mask how she's hurt people in the past, whether it's her ex-girlfriend, her relationship with Ezra and even the supporting characters that she only reaches out to when her best friends are nowhere to be found.

A little bit predictable at times, and far too many typos for a tradpub novel, but I just really enjoyed being in Eve's messy, messy head.

The concept of this book is definitely original and unique. I can see a lot of readers relating to the main characters as young people who are focused on friendships, dating, and partying as part of city life. With the use of the internet and texting, too, the book feels very modern. I personally struggled a bit to connect and didn't fall in love with the prose, though for readers who are drawn to the plot, the book is absolutely worth a shot.
