It was too technical to be properly absorbed as an audiobook. I may try the print version eventually.

Just like in The Emperor of all Maladies, Mukherjee has hit it out of the park with the insight and historical depth of this book. I have a degree in biology, so I can't speak to how readable this book is for people who don't have that background, but I found it to be a fascinating look back for me. It was a reminder of why I fell in love with the science of biology in the first place, and, in particular, genetics and cellular biology. It is clear that an immense amount of care went into this book. Wherever there are multiple sides to be examined, Mukherjee does it with grace and understanding. I will definitely be passing this book on to at least one friend who I know will love it, and will be picking up Mukherjee's most recent book once I work through my current TBR.

This book took me awhile to finish for it has very in-depth stories and backgrounds. This book went over the history and findings from the founding fathers of science. How genes became the forefront of science and everyone’s mind. I would say this book was more a massive history/science lesson. I do love the authors way of making it fun for most of the book.

WARNING!!! ⚠️⚠️⚠️
If you do not appreciate the science history and in-depth analysis of the people who made it what it is today. This is not for you.

The audiobook narrator was difficult to get past for me at first, but the content turned out to be interesting enough for me to enjoy the book itself. I didn't realize this book is a decade old, so there's certainly advancement that was not yet available to write about. I'd love to hear an update covering the last 10 years.
