Slightly mixed feelings on this one, I felt the build to the wedding and then the issues following it somehow took up 50% of the book, but then were resolved with basically no issue at the end very quickly? I did like that finally got the romance finally peaked, and I go the ending I wanted with that.

I really liked that this tied in the Chicago murder house - a serial killer I am a bit more familiar with from the podcast LORE. It was an interesting twist I wasn't expecting after stalking jack the ripper. It also makes me feel a little bit better about her brother (though he obviously still have alot of awful issues)

Though I liked the wedding stuff and then the chicago stuff seperately it didn't feel like one continuous story, the two sections felt very separate and the transition wasn't smooth.

Overall I did enjoy this series, just casually listened to them all while I was working, but they didn't overly rock my world.

I'm a little bit sad that there was less mystery in this book, but I loved it anyway. Spoiler: I guess for anyone familiar with H. H. Holmes, the reveal of the actual (or other half?) Jack the Ripper won't be a total surpirse. I couldn't be upset by realising who the murderer was when he first entered the page, because I would've been absolutely heartbroken if the story went another way and someone like uncle Jonathan would end up being revealed as the actual Jack the Ripper. Audrey Rose and Thomas have my heart and I'm so glad they get to have their happily ever after.

So long, I'm off to find my own Thomas Cresswell now.

I loved this series so much! Audrey Rose is such a great heroine. Sad it came to an end but happy it exists.

The plot went out the window with this one. I'll forever be a Thomas Cresswell stan but that's it. I probably keep my paperback copies of these for niece to read when she gets old enough to read them, because there not bad but not the best historical mystery I've ever read.

Below is taken directly from my livetweeting. I have no strength to write a review for this anymore.

I feared I was becoming addicted to blood.

it's one thing to like what you do, it's another to walk in street where they butcher animals because you mIsSeD tHe CrImE sCeNeS.

something about Kerri Maniscalco rating her own book 5 stars threw me off, man.

another aspect of why this series is so off for me is because the author seemed to know nothing about history?? or even purposely ignore historical accuracy, which for me, is a big red flag. i don't even want to talk about how wildly false the Jack the Ripper case was, let alone bringing it BACK over and over in the series. in this book, Audrey Rose's father threatened her that her property would go to Thomas as they got married BUT the Married Women's Property Act of 1884, (this book is based in 1889), allowed women to own and control their own property, whether it was acquired before or after they married.

so what is the credibility of the threat?? is it there just so Maniscalco can go another 100 pages about how Audrey Rose and Thomas love each other?

i love Thomas. he valued Audrey so highly and grew from his first impression, and yet Audrey can't even do the same. she acted like such a big person in this relationship while Thomas did everything for her (exhibit A: their vows - Thomas cares for her and promises her what he would do, whereas Audrey only cares about her fucking self. i'm so tired.)

at this point you might be asking, fisher, are you reading a murder mystery book or a romance book? and im telling you, I DON'T KNOW !!

“Seeing me naked and vulnerable unleashed a part of Thomas I wasn’t sure he’d known existed.” writing shit like this in first person narrative is so off and makes the character so braggy. it is downright embarrassing tbh.

and yes, this is a full on romance book now. WHY TF IS THE DESCRIPTION SO LONG? it went on pages and pages and we HAVE ESTABLISHED THAT SHE IS NAKED, BUT IN THE NEXT PAGE, HE TOOK OFF HER NIGHTGOWN, AGAIN? DID Y'ALL PUT IT BACK ON OR WHAT?
