Capturing the Devil 10/10- I don’t really know how to function now that I’ve finished this series. I started book one at the very beginning of my reading journey (freshman yr I believe), and finished this series senior year, reading a book every year of high school. This story and its characters have traveled with me through my childhood, and will forever hold the top spot in my heart for historical romances (nothing can beat cressworth). As for this specific book review- it was perfect. The ending we all deserved, Thomas and Audrey are two characters I will never stop loving. They hold such a powerful spot in my heart (especially Thomas), and it hurts me so terribly to say goodbye to these characters I’ve practically grown up thinking about. This entire series just encapsulates the perfect kate series: historical romance, dark mystery vibes, intelligent main girl, swoonworthly and crazy smart guy, and an unforgettable plot. This is one of my ALL time favs, and I will continue to compare practically every historical romance mystery to this series. Beyond life, beyond death my love for this series is eternal.

“Beware of trusting beautiful creatures. They hide the most wicked surprises.”

Maniscalco is a brilliant author with intense descriptions, beautiful characters, & the most powerful stories to tell. Overall, the series gets 4⭐️ only missing one because in this one (the final in the series) I felt like we were focusing more on the love story than the murder mystery case presented to us. Which then made me feel like the ending was slightly rushed/forced.

With all that in the mind I still loved the story & the characters.. it just seemed to take me forever to get through the book because I didn’t start it with the desire for a love story. The killer wasn’t really a “surprise”. In the other books everyone seemed to have motive, in this one you know in the first meeting of the killer who they are. This does not take away from the other shock value to come at the end, it just felt like something was missing that held power in the first three novels.

If you’ve read the other three books though, reading this one will give you closure. It’ll answer all unanswered questions.. even the ones you didn’t realize you had at first. Kerri Maniscalco has become an instant buy for me and while I realize her work will not be for everyone, for me it is everything I look for in a book❤️

I loved this series so deeply. The love story between Audrey Rose and Thomas was so so so sweet despite being surrounded by murderers and corpses at every turn.

The best way to describe this book is - PLOT-TWISTER!!! The epic finale to the Stalking Jack the Ripper series is so worth the crazy roller coaster ride it takes you on!! #cressworth4life !

I really like the way the author wove the 'facts' that we know about crimes of the past with her own story. I never heard of H. H. Homes and the Murder Castle, so it was kind of fun to go and read the actual stories. And I like the fact that she was able to incorporate so many sensational real life characters into this series. Overall, a fun read

I'd disembowel the world and bathe in its blood if someone murdered him.

⚠️Trigger Warning: Graphic Death, Violence⚠️

This book is perfection! Not only does it repair all the damage from Escaping from Houdini that its ending and the novella couldn't fix, but it also details the most shocking case in Audrey Rose's and Thomas's careers. The White City Devil is Audrey Rose and Thomas's most horrific foe to date, and one who has a personal connection to both of them, especially Audrey Rose. He is certainly something to fear. Also, Audrey Rose recurringly mentions throughout the series that: 1. she constantly feels watched, no matter where she is, and 2. that she refuses to become the kind of monster she hunts, both of which are spectacular foreshadowing for the events of this book.

Even though the whole wedding sub-plot between Thomas and Audrey Rose is barely a conflict and is entirely anticlimactic, especially in comparison to the shock of the main plot, I can't find it in me to hate that my babies are finally happy and officially together and that this issue barely makes a dent in their feelings and behavior toward each other.

I was so pleased with this final installment in the Stalking Jack the Ripper series. I was a bit concerned that the author might try to be “edgy” and end with tragedy, so I’m pleased that this author has nothing against HEA’s. It felt so rewarding having stuck with the series through each book (even though EFH tested my endurance) to see this conclusion.

There are so many things I love about Audrey Rose and Thomas, but I really appreciate Kerri’s desire to write about a heroine who is differently abled.

Lastly, after all the trauma Audrey Rose has endured, the completion of her arc in this installment felt immensely satisfying.
