First Campbell read for me, enlightening and thought-provoking. I enjoy gaining new vocabulary for thinking about and discussing spirituality and humanities desire to understand our greater purpose.

Very dated, debunked 'theory'

The great philosopher of our time.

I actually took notes on this and I wasn't even in school at the time.

A young friend read The Power of Myth recently and she found it to be eye opening. I was reminded that although I 'know' Joseph Campbell's work, I hadn't read this classic book.

It's a brilliant and wide ranging book, and it's been a timely read, offering insight into ways of thinking I had recently noticed were too absent in my life lately. Four stars because I also bogged down in the exchanges between Campbell and Bill Moyers, finding the narrative to be slow going. I often found myself wondering what I would read next in this vein; although Campbell is such an undisputed expert I want to know who else is writing, in ways that might speak more directly to me.
challenging hopeful informative inspiring medium-paced

I have mixed feelings about this book. The interview format was a little tiring for me toward the end of the book. I think at times Moyers asks questions that are a bit out of Campbell’s focus or expertise. Some of Campbell’s statements are a bit off the mark for me. Moyers, too.
On the other hand, I watched the DVD of this interview a little while back and I think this book gave me the in depth look at Joseph Campbell’s work that I was eager for. Some of the insights and universal themes he outlines are pretty fascinating. It was easier to digest than The Hero with a Thousand Faces, which I started but had to put down. I had a similar issue with this book in his reference to myths that made no sense to me. That’s more my issue than his though. I particularly enjoyed the many references to the Buddha and Buddhist stories.

Fascinating material. The conversational format made it harder for me to digest -- they seemed to wander here and there. But the ideas are incredible and Joseph Campbell was such an incredibly learned person.

cooool perspectiveeeee mannnn

I liked Campbell takes on myth and interpretation.. all the other stuff felt like the same motivational gurus that felt a bit out of place
