There's not much to say about this book other than it was excellent, heartbreaking, raw, compassionate, hard, and precise.
These essays, written and read by women who understand what it means to look at their tragic situation and be lulled into thinking its better because others have it worse, left me hollow.
I loved them for their truth. I recommend this to everyone.
I especially loved chapter 26 because it hits close to home, but please take the time to read all of this book, you won't regret it.

I have run out of sticky tabs, there is no ink left in my highlighter, I am so angry and so moved, and I feel so understood.

I'm not going to try to rate this. It's an important book, but so difficult in so many ways.

CW: Discussions of sexual violence and murder (This review and also the book)
Really powerful, informative, and moving!
As a BIPOC non-binary/trans-feminine person the realities that many BIPOC femmes face (sexual harassment, sexual assault, rape, murder, etc.) has become an ever-growing concern for me. It was one of the things that had given me pause when contemplating transition. That said, I still chose to move forward with HRT and ignorance is very much not bliss. Although these essays are hard to read/listen to (I consumed the audiobook vice the hard copy/ebook), I would implore you to check this book out.
The following essays had a profound effect on me:
"The Sun" by Emma Smith-Stevens
"I Said Yes" by Anthony Frame
"Why I Didn't Say No" by Elissa Bassist
The audiobook is phenomenally done as well and I recommend that method, as it felt very powerful hearing different folks narrate each chapter!

Most powerful and thought provoking book I’ve read in a long time. It was a tough read due to the subject matter, however each and every story from the depressing to inspiring ones was written beautifully.
Reading this book brought a lot of memories for me, but also made me feel less alone in my healing.
Thank you Roxane Gay and every beautiful soul who contributed to this book

A collection of essays from survivors of rape, sexual assault or child abuse. It really is that bad. And the culture has to shift. We have to have a culture shift.
