Overall, I liked this book. I felt like it contained important characters and important lessons and diversity that didn't feel manufactured. But there was something that didn't quite feel right once it was over. I decided today that it was because only Virgil got his story resolved. Although I personally identified the most with Virgil, I wanted to see Valencia, Kaori, and especially Chet resolve the issues in their lives. We were given unique views into their lives, but had it snatched away without ceremony.
It's a ragtag group of kids who honestly don't know how to socialize. They've all got their own handicaps and quirks. And you might never expect their paths to cross. but they do.
it's a story trying to understand friendship. of how to be brave.

This book won the 2018 Newberry Medal and I loved it so much!!
I loved this and wanted to give it 5✨ but honestly the amount of times I had to flag the R-word so I could discuss with our BoB kids made me kind of sad. I feel like once and a discussion about it would have been enough but then the kid you want to hate anyway says it a bunch more times. Idk, it just felt unnecessary.

These are the types of characters we need for all our students to see themselves in the books they read.
Loved this! Virgilio is affectionately nicknamed “Turtle” by his family. He is shy and reserved but yearns for friendship and finding more.
This is the story of a fateful summer experience that helps him do just that.
I loved the mystical aspect invited in by his knowledge of Vietnamese folklore thanks to his grandmother and the twists of fate.
Can’t wait to read more from this author.
Highly recommended for 10-14 year olds.
