Surprisingly good! There were some suspenseful moments. Overall, I loved the characters except the bully, of course. I would definitely recommend to my middle schoolers.

I liked it. Nice story about childhood friendships. Some mentions of cultural differences, allowing these to influence the characters but not take over, there all still individuals.
A Newbery award is a lot to live up to, almost a burden (except that it will keep your book in print forever). I enjoyed it, but kept questioning it's Newbery merit. By the end of the story of three uncool kids and a neighborhood bully, I felt like the story, themes and characters tied together beautifully and I really loved the ending. It would be a great book to read with a child or classroom; there is very much to talk about and a group of kids to really care about.
A 12 year old psychic and her 6 yr old sidekick, a heroic rescue, a wise granny, spirit visits, a shy introvert, and a deaf extroverted heroine... What more could you ask for?
And can we just take a moment to enjoy Virgil's intentional, introverted, demisexual crush on Valencia? ❤❤❤
The only thing wrong with this book is that it wasn't written in the 90s

A book for those who feel they are invisible. Virgil doesn't fit in anywhere he thinks. His family is an exclamation mark family, while he is quiet and reserved. He has to go to the resource room to work with a teacher one on one where he observed Valencia, a hearing impaired girl who is confident but has trouble understanding what people are talking about. Virgil ends up having to face his fears and try to overcome his shyness by finally communicating with those around him. It is a subtle search for ones voice and making ones self heard.
This was weird. I'm really surprised it won awards. They're middle schoolers, but it's written like elementary. The bully is horrible, and there's no character arc. Anticlimactic. Odd. Confusing storyline with the dog?
