A Painted House

John Grisham

A "serious" Grisham. Still a quick read, and kind of creepy!

Apart from the fact that I didn't get the story (somehow disconnected), I struggled with the narrator, a 7 year old boy. NO way, a 7 year old boy could have told this "story", the boy must have been rather 14 or older and that spoiled it for me.
I just read the book( and another one by Grisham), because someone gave a box of books to me and these two seemed to be the lesser evil.

Eh, I personally didn't care for this book too much. It's an easy read and there's a constant drama, but it's not a complete story. You get invested in the fates of so many characters, and you get nothing. The story cuts off as if you were watching a documentary and then caught up to present day. We don't know if certain characters ever make it home, we don't know if the dreams of certain characaters are ever accomplished, if certain murders are ever solved, etc. I really didn't like that aspect of it, because it just left me feeling like "Well, what was the point of that?"

Does Grisham paint a great picture? Yes. Does he create interesting characters? Yes. But I was left wanting at the end.

So this is actually the first book of Grisham I've ever read. I can't do his usual legal things, I don't know why it's just something I could never get into. Not for a lack of trying.
When I came into this one I was skeptical, I was unsure of it. Read it anyways. A really great book.
It's major flaw, there really is no plot. No super climax that sums up it all, only a slight climax that ends with you wishing there was more.

The rest is good. The story flows well, the characters are magnificently sculpted. The boy is naïve, has enough to be happy about but wishes for more and gets in a bit too deep in certain things. Hell, I related pretty well with the character. I was the same way when I was younger (different time period and occupation but still).
Not really sure what else to say, as I said there is no clear plot. It moves from one point to the next with a nice enough flow.

Not for everyone, though. I loved it, personally. It isn't everyday a story like this pulls me in. But as I said, it isn't for everyone.

One of my favorites of John Grisham's novels. Not a courtroom story, more small town family farm. I highly recommend this novel to anyone looking for a deep story.

Maybe 2.5 stars. I didn't really like any of the characters except maybe Pearl and the nameless, characterless Mexicans minus Cowboy. The characters were not well developed. Their sense of morality was all screwed up, even by the main characters. The seven year old did not have the mind or voice of a seven year old and for all of his moving from "innocence to experience" as per the book summary, I got very little indication of growth. I skimmed most of it because I didn't care enough for the story or characters to become more invested.

Very slow moving book. Had a hard time getting through it.

The story in this book moved on quite slowly, and maybe it eas too slow for my taste. Even though there were two murders it seemed like nothing really happened.

I found it a bit weird how Luke though about girls even though he was only seven. But in a way it was interesting to see the story through children's eyes and sometimes the slow pace seemed almost relaxing.

3.5 - Difficult to get through a few chapters because of my lack of interest in baseball. There is a lot of talk about baseball in this book. Otherwise it was a pleasant read, but hard to get through at times

I saw the movie, but the book was much better
