Wasn't a fan...... creepy.... disturbing..... action filled in some parts..... boring in others... I would read it again and maybe I would have a different view but when I read it the whole thing was over my head.
This book grew on me as I read it. Seemed like a good rendering of a certain time and place. I liked how he showed people in their many facets, painting them in good light and bad. This may not be great literature but it is a good read.
Marvelous! Wonderful! Exceptional!
What a book. Really loved it. Great plot.
Was always reluctant in picking up this book, glad I did. I was expecting another legal thriller, but I was surprised that there wasn't even one lawyer in this book. Really amazing seeing Grisham writing historical fiction.
A story about a seven year old boy, Luke Chandler who lives with his parents and grandparents in Arkansas and are cotton farmers and how the summer of 1952 changed his life.
This book felt like an autobiography of John Grisham because of his similar childhood.
The ending felt like there's still another part of it, maybe I'm wrong.

Unexpectedly enjoyable book. I read most of Grisham's legal fictions while in high school, and didn't expect to like his writing so much as an adult. I would have given this 4 stars however it lost momentum and felt a bit disorganized in the last 15-20% of the book.
I was curious what john Grisham would do with a subject NOT about legal matters.. And I was very pleased! Grisham is a beautiful story teller, and really sets the scene for life on a small cotton farm in the 50's... His characters are very detailed, and I grew to love some and despise others (which to me is proof of a good writer).... Worth the read!
I'm glad I started to read this whilst visiting America. Although we were in a completely different state we did drive through farming areas (fruit rather than cotton) and it helped me to picture the vastness and the lovely neat rows described in the book.
It is not fast paced by any means, and although there is two murders neither are tackled from a legal point of view. It is quite a gentle story seen from the point of view of a 7 year old, although he felt older at times (do boys of that age really see girls like that?). I was about quarter of the way through when I had to return home so this was quite a pleasant, non taxing read to help fill some of the 10 hours on a plane.
