Malcolm Gladwell

Malcolm Gladwell is a great writer, but this book felt like an overly drawn out essay or article. His examples are a bit dated now given the digital revolution, and honestly the conclusions he draws are nothing new anymore. I hated how he kept jumping from various examples instead of presenting one case study and then moving on to the next. Was not impressed.

While outdated now, The Tipping Point was an innovative book when it came out. Malcolm has a way of storytelling that brings the lay person to challenging concepts. Appreciated the afterword to help bring the theory into this decade, but I can see younger generations finding the book less interesting.

Hard to say exactly what didn’t work for me about this one. Maybe it’s just too outdated (written in 2008), and I think the afterward and follow up book makes that clear. I discovered Malcolm Gladwell through his podcast and this felt like it was too high level even for a podcast episode. Intro to psych level stuff. Meh.

Wonderful introduction to Malcolm Gladwell. Always heard of him, but never knew what he was about. I loved how it took a very simple concept, expanded on it to the point of overwhelming, and then broke it down into easily digestible portions. I thought it was a fascinating way at looking at how trends and human consciousness spreads within society, and how it can seem both predictable and unpredictable at the same time. I feel like this book is ever more present because of the post Covid world that we live in.

DID NOT FINISH: 39%

Fundamentally disagree with certain points of view the author seems to have. Too many anecdotal stories for my taste.

I’ve been a fan of Malcolm Gladwell since his book Blink and have read most of his other books going forward. I had this one on my TBR stack for a long time. Now that Gladwell has published Revenge of the Tipping Point I decided to read this one just before reading the new one. As with Blink, I find Gladwell’s books work well in this format. This version has the author’s afterword which includes some important reflection on the book and new developments since the original book, especially the influence of the internet. Since the model of how epidemics spread is important in this book it will be especially interesting to see his new book with the perspective of the Covid epidemic fresh on our minds. I would have liked more examples in the book; thus I didn’t give it five stars.
