Such a fucked up story that gave great insight into Levana’s character and why she is the way that she is, I absolutely loved it. She is such an interesting, complex and well-written character.
So this falls under a "novella" more than a novel. It was a good read, but I love Marissa Meyer's writing and could have read more! (Especially after paying the full price of a regular length novel!) There are 4 advance chapters for the final Lunar Chronicles book, which will hopefully tide me over until the finale.

I had high hopes for this one since I was interested in Lunar culture and Levana's backstory, but I was left wanting. I had been hoping to better understand Levana, and while we got a little bit of it, we don't really get much about how Lunar society has become what it is and how that might have shaped Levana. Yes, her sister abused her and her parents neglected her, but that's only one part of the story and this book would have been improved by the rest of it.

This was a great read! I really like this trend (in tv and books) of getting to know and understand the villain. I know some people were/are hesitant to read this one because they love to hate Levana and don't want to be able to empathize with or have any sympathy for her. Fear not--read on! MM does a fantastic job of weaving a complex history for Levana that makes us at first feel badly for her and the way she was raised. Then she masterfully twists that so instead of feeling sympathetic, we view Levana with a vague sense of distaste and/or disgust, all the while still understanding why she does what she does. We get to see a great back story that ties some things together and still end loving to hate the bad guy!
