It wasn't... bad? Or rather, it wasn't terrible.
As much as I loved the author's vivid insight into a whirlwind environment I could only remotely fathom, some voice in the back of my head rolled my eyes whenever *she* rolled her eyes. I get the frustrating moments when Miranda requested things she'd obviously never articulated, or when she expected Andy or Emily to read her mind (the actual duck with those phone connections), or when she'd execute some twisted power play over anyone "below" her. But it felt like every other page, I was reading about Andy griping about "menial" tasks, or taking 20 extra minutes for a smoke break, or forgetting to think about the other people in her life. I suppose that's the point of the book, to show how much Miranda could warp Andy's sense of self and priorities... but have some integrity, maybe? Or perhaps I'm as Emily as they come, and I think that anyone who isn't willing to experience a bit of pain via long workweeks or tough bosses needs to suck it up. Whether you're a corporate cog or a relentless artist, isn't it about putting yourself on the grind and coming out more capable?
Tldr, it was cute but the author was a bit whiny and I found it difficult to empathize (unless the devil was truly being a devil). I'll stick to the movie.

i learned that maybe i'm glad i didn't go into the publishing world. this was a great book that had me laughing and crying. very good book and easy to read. i think i read it in a couple of days. i have 2 kids under 5 so reading in big blocks of time doesn't happen often.
DNF. I could not stand this book. Boring and repetitive, not to mention full of classism and racism. Like every other page there was a comment about a taxi driver or person working at a stand who didn’t speak English well. Complete with phonetically spelled dialogue in their accent.
Good book interesting seeing how fricked up a boss can be and the consequences of devoting your life to a demanding job. Also book was quite different to the movie.

Main character ruined it all. She's tiring, petty and complains a tad too much to the point I cannot relate. Miranda is an absolute caricature. A drunken 2-star, at most...
