Race, Identity, Sisterhood

“Why can’t you just be yourself?” Stella asked once.
“Maybe I don’t know who that is,” her daughter shot back. And Stella understood, she did. That was the thrill of youth, the idea that you could be anyone. That was what had captured her in the charm shop, all those years ago”

Notes: Kind of disappointing despite the multiple perspective narrative, it struggled to keep my interest in either it's tonality or structure.

It was an okay read but nothing extraordinary to be honest. I liked the characters but the story itself was all right at best.

I started this book thinking it was going to be about just one thing, but in reality, it's about so many things and has so much complexity. I was drawn in and found myself thinking about the characters when I wasn't reading and even for a few days after I finished. The title alludes to how so many people can have many facets and sometimes by chance or by choice, we can live a life leaving part of ourselves in the past or in the shadows. I loved this book so much.
