"Two lifetimes, they belong to you."

Despite the fluffy title, this novel is chock full of angst, so...I've rarely read a story so full of tragedy, and I've read A Little Life.

I have a lot of thoughts about this book and no words to express them, lol. I did enjoy it a lot, for its length I read it really fast because I was literally glued to my kindle, I had an hard time putting it down. The way the story unfolds slowly as Mo Ran finds out all the secrets he didn't know in his past life, the way the plot twists are revealed, how the misunderstandings play an heartbreaking part in deciding the course of events...oof.

Chu Wanning was my favorite character, I'm glad the author went with multiple POVs because I really enjoyed his perspective and I think it was necessary. His loneliness and self-hatred mixed with his desire to be loved and wanted broke my entire heart, the way he loved Mo Ran so much in both lifetimes...

I also liked Mo Ran and his growth in the second lifetime, the things that happened to him in his childhood and the stuff that's done to him just before he dies a second time are so fucking sad. His death scene in the 2.0 timeline shattered my fucking heart.

0.5 Ranwan is uhhhh...complicated to say the least. There's a lot of pain and trauma there that I don't even know how to talk about, I just think their lives in that timeline are devastatingly tragic. What is done to 0.5 Chu Wanning is absolutely awful, but I also feel sad for Taxian-jun, I guess. None of his actions are in any way excusable, but he was also not in control of himself due to the curse. Learning that he was cursed in the first place to protect Chu Wanning was...wow. I can't keep saying heartbreaking but it honestly was. The same goes for Chu Wanning splitting his soul to try and save the Mo Ran of another world from suffering the same fate. Their entire story in 0.5 just makes me want to cry, and I'm kind of sad we never get any real closure between the Ranwan of that world despite Taxian-jun coming back. Like, I know Chu Wanning has all the memories of the 0.5 lifetime but it still feels like their story ended in tragedy, at least to me.

I loved how, in contrast, 2.0 Ranwan was very soft and sweet and I liked how much 2.0 Mo Ran cherished Chu Wanning. They went through so much but I'm really glad they found their happy ending.

I have to say, the way the story is constructed sometimes can be aggravating. It's a very long book so obviously some story arcs reaaaally dragged for me, and while the use of flashing back to the past often in some scenes really heightened the emotion, in others it would just feel really annoying because it took away from the action of the moment. I also expected a bit more out of their final reunion in the second to last chapter.

I also would have liked to see a bit more of how Chu Wanning deals with the trauma of what happened to his 0.5 self, especially considering Taxian-jun stays in Mo Ran's body. Since the story makes his trauma such a big part of it, I would've also liked to see a bit of the recovery in the aftermath.

This isn't a novel I would recommend to just anyone, it has a lot of trigger warnings and it deals with very dark themes. It gets really uncomfortable, and while I wasn't triggered by any of the themes I had to push myself to continue reading sometimes. Despite all of this I think it's a story that's really fascinating and engaging and leaves you with a lot to think about.

edit: lowered to 1 star bc i enjoyed this book a lot less than the other books i rated 2 stars lol
2.5 stars
im so glad i'm finally free of this book
i have regrets
this book is sooooooo long but it got me with sunk cost so I made myself finish it
there is so much random plot stuff that i just didn’t understand. the first half was alright, the middle i skimmed and was kinda lost, near the end it started getting better and near the very very end it just became chaos
there are parts of it that are good but mostly it is so so long i wish there was less random plot stuff i feel like that could have been simplified a lot. i don’t really even remember what was going on in the beginning anymore.
everyone in this book needs therapy.

I'm just dnf-ing it at this point. It's SOOOO draining to read and honestly don't see myself going back to finish it. I have a general idea of how it ends but I don't care about actually finishing it. I'm at chapter 195 and so there's still some plot stuff that hasn't been revealed but I literally don't care.

There's some heavy topics in this. The idea of redemption and revenge and so much violence. There's too much rape and at a certain point we are meant to believe that the victim is fine with it cuz he was in love with Moran. The romance is also between a student and teacher and the age gap is so weird. This takes place in 2 different timelines. In the original moran likes his teacher and chu wanning likes him back but neither know that. Their ages? Moran was 15 and wanning is in his 20s.

The original timelines story is that Moran accepts a poisonous flower to be planted in his heart instead of having it on wanning. This flower makes him obsess over the person who planted it and forget any good anyone does for him and leads to a lot of anger and violence. He takes over everything and causes a genocide. Barely anyone is left alive. He keeps wanning as his prisoner, taunting and raping him until wanning dies protecting the one part of the world Moran hadn't gotten to. Moran kills himself and wakes up in his 15 yr old body in a different timeline and decides to change but he still holds that violence in him. The flower needs to come out. He is in his 30s at this point but to everyone else he's 15.

Their love blooms after a lot of shit that is too much to explain and Moran does go thru a redemption tho I never got to see it finished or even get to the middle of it since I stopped reading.

My issues with this novel is how wanning just... never seems to actually have any trauma over his past life? He finds out about the flower way later but even before and with every time he gets hurt, he keeps thinking how he deserves it and it's so draining. Like he had a privileged upbringing! He just was alone a lot so didn't have much friends. I can't believe he would be that much of a unstable person. Like being lonely gave him trauma but not the 10 years of torture at his student's hand lmao.

I already mentioned the age issues and the power imbalance but the other thing that I never got to reading but I know about xuz I got spoiled: the antagonist is a half demon half human race who wants to get his people back to hell? And it's because their ppl LITERALLY RAPED AND CANNIBALIZED. they're not seen as human. It's perfectly normal for everyone there. But to get back home to hell they need a lot of blood and bone so their solution was... mass genocide in 2 different timelines. These ppl need to keep hidden if they wanna live. The one person who we know of is literally in danger the entire time so obviously she's extremely cunning in order to live. She does things that are morally wrong in order to survive. She isn't given a second chance, or a redemption or even a moment without judgement unlike Moran who has done worse and got all of that.

Moran hates himself for the things he did but wants to change yet doesn't hold the same energy for anyone else. The misogyny in the book is just fucking annoying. So given our antagonists, I was questioning everything. This topic is so complex it needs so much time and care into developing it right. But I was 60% of the way thru and we haven't gotten anything about it. I wish it focused in that! And I really hope the author didn't end the book by continuously painting them in bad light, the genocide was caused by a few handful everyone else was trying to live and not be raped or fucking eaten.

Despite all that, everything else was decent. And the extra star is for ye wangxi my wife, and xue meng and his parents true saving graces.

Book 1; Fuck, i don't even know what to say anymore. The worst fucking experience in my life. The title is so deceiving, i really thought the fandom was joking with the angst but boy. . . i haven't even finish it yet

this book devastated me with all of its plot twists and had me feeling like that spongebob meme that’s like “i was born with glass bones and paper skin. every morning, i break my legs, and every afternoon, i break my arms. at night, i lie awake in agony until my heart attacks put me to sleep.”
