A fun adventure. Action packed with a solid plot and strong character development. Scarlett is an unforgettable character and her banter with Albert was great.

Loved this post apocalyptic adventure story written by one of my fav authors Jonathan Stroud.
Scarlett is a bank robbing, gun toting bad ass who has laid down more than few bad guys in her lifetime. Think of her as a kind of punk rock female Robin Hood— she doesn’t generally harm/steal from innocent people. And this version of England has lots of non innocent people, along with monsters and supernatural frights to go around. One day, while fleeing her latest robbery, she stumbles upon a survivor of a horrific bus crash and reluctantly brings him along with her in her travels. Pretty soon, she comes to realize that the many men pursuing her might not be after her… And the gangly, awkward teen boy she rescued might be hiding a rather large secret.
This reads non-stop action with Stroud’s trademark humor and elegant writing. Imagine X Men set in a post apocalyptic, Wild West. I loved this, and I can’t wait to read more.
I would say Grade 7 and up for this one— there’s lots of gunplay and scary creatures and the main characters are older teens.

I adored Lockwood but this book felt like a different author. I’m not sure if the UK version I read is any different than the American but I found it really hard to picture anything in this book. I couldn’t see the setting or the characters or the fights it was full of awkward wordy descriptions that seemed out of place ? I was really looking forward to reading based on all the good reviews but I just didn’t agree with them. The premise and cute main characters kept me going to see what was going to happen but at the end I cannot decide whether I liked this book or not so I am leaving at a mid rating. It was alright.

I loved this a lot but knocking off a star because Mr. Stroud seems to be only able to write one type of female character: fiesty heroine who has a smart mouth and kicks ass (with the exception of maybe Asmira from Ring of Solomon). Nothing wrong with that and I've loved all of them (Kitty, Lucy Carlyle, and now Scarlett) but it's a bit disappointing when he's had more variability in his heroes.

Interesting new world, easy to read, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really liked this one!

Johnathan Stroud writes beautifully dynamic and interesting female characters. I really enjoyed the seemingly contradicting traits that Scarlett had, and I think that Albert made the perfect foil for her character.

I didn't mind the lack of explanation/details, and I felt satisfied by the ending. If you are the type of person that needs a lot of lore/background/explanation right away, this book might not be for you.
