In a post-"Cataclysm" England, where acceptable people live in walled towns run by ruling families, and the Faith houses have most of the power, Scarlett McCain chooses to live life on her own terms (and under various chosen names), which means she is constantly using her excellent knife, gun, and verbal skills to stay alive and out of the punishment cages. Really bad criminals, as well as people (mostly children) who prove to be different from what the rulers determine is acceptable (such as, most commonly, having a birthmark or unusually shaped body but also including "problems" of the mind, mutism, etc.), are chained to metal poles in the woods to be eaten by scarily mutated wild animals. Meanwhile, Albert Browne is a prisoner at Stonemoor, where he is subject to torture in the name of experimentation, while being told he is disgusting and vile because of his "unnatural" abilities. When they meet up, both on the run, they gradually develop appreciation and trust of each other, which is a good thing because they are in peril on nearly every page, being chased, attacked, tortured, or threatened. The chief villain is a sadistic, chilling manipulator of both emotions and circumstances with henchmen who all seem to wear bowler hats.

Best for MS or even HS; younger readers who can handle torture and MCs in constant real peril including from the Tainted (pale, wispy cannibalistic humanoids), merciless villains, and scary animals such as large razor-toothed birds.
