Enjoyable but nothing stood out. The characters were way too stubborn for being adults.

This is a book that mixes science and magic. It was a good contemporary romance that asked the age-old question of is it fate or is it just a coincidence?

The book was a little slow for my taste, but I always enjoy reading about the Chinese American culture.

I was given an ARC by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, all words are my own.

Disappointingly, the title was the best executed idea in the book. The ideas in this book were interesting and I thought the premise was adorable. Unfortunately though, the writing was exhausting. The characters say every tiny thing in their absolutely unbelievable dialogue and the author hits you over the head with themes about fate versus choice by smashing you over the head with them. Really a shame because if it had been treated better it could have been a literary twist of the genre.

Literally 1 star and that is merely cause I love the red string theory and finished it because for my life I cannot DNF a book.

I have no idea how this book managed to butcher one of my favorite Chinese folklore theories/superstitions this badly. These people were bland af and I would have disliked all of them irl. Jack especially, zero personality and when he did he was so unlikable. “I love you but I won’t be with you because I do not believe in coincidences and fate.” How are you like thirty and still feel the need to rebuke everything someone says.

And do not get me started on the pseudonyms or art work names. Shit was goofy af. Someone said these people aren’t normal and I 1000% agree.

I really enjoyed this book and how the characters went through realistic growth with their mindsets. Rooney and Jack didn’t compromise their beliefs for one another, but learned to understand the other person’s perspective, which I appreciate. I loved the distinction and yet meshing of the fate vs choice debate, because I believe in both and it’s nice to see the middle ground represented. Rooney and Jack are very sweet together, and Lauren Kung Jessen did a great job of humanizing these characters by showing their positive and negative sides. The only reason I am not giving the book five stars is because the pace was a little too slow for my liking. Other than that, I enjoyed everything else and thought it was very well written. I listened to the story as an audiobook and I love the way it was done. I really felt immersed in the story with the duel perspectives and performances, with the actors actually talking to each other instead of trying to mimic the other’s voice when it was their turn. This is a very sweet and lighthearted rom-com that anyone can enjoy and relate to.

Super cute. I liked that Jack was more science based, but wasn't a robot; and Rooney was a free spirit that also understood theoretical science.
