This was, quite sadly, really nothing more than a segue to the next book. It wasn't bad, per se--but it was largely unimportant. I don't feel as though the plot were particularly furthered, and no big reveals to pressing questions were answered. I feel like the book could have been a quarter of the length, while still conveying everything it did at 300+ pages, and likely been combined with the next book to make a more complete story.
Really, I could probably have skipped this book, picked up the next one, and not feel like I missed much.

Objectively, this has been my least favourite book of Hobb's so far. I don't love the way she dumps exposition, and there was a lot of that around the dragon city . Still, I think the conversations around sex and birth and womanhood and fear were so so so ambitious, and I just keep loving watching those conversations evolve, especially with such a beautiful rich fantasy story where it got to be kind of in the background, but like... added such a cool undercurrent to life in the rainwilds and budding romances and social and sexual politics among the teenagers. Hobb is such a genius. I hate having one less book of hers left in this series.

this took me 20 days to read.
oh my god it turns out when they're done walking up a river THERE IS NOTHING ELSE TO DO
i'm joking (mostly)
we still kept up good character plot, albeit a bit boring, i ADORED the malta and reyn sections, i want to be a hater so bad but i guess it's not in the cards, and leftrin is silly too
what do you mean their son is named ephron bendir khrupus. WHAT DO YOU MEAN?!?
honestly the elderling stuff was super interesting! i just think creating the river boundary and only having like 2 characters get to see the city 3/4 of the way through the book just sucks, get em all in there!
still love sedric and his 3 chapters solely about his boyfriend, he needs a hobby
SELDEN IN CHANCLED , TINTAGLIA THE DRAGON COMING BACK , EVIL TWINK ON HIS WAY TO (hopefully) GET KILLED
NEXT BOOK WILL BE PEAK TRUST 🔥🔥🔥

The letters passed between the Keeper of the Birds might have been one of my favourite parts.
This book is kind of filler, but also needed to move the plot along.
There is a lot about mating and snappy dragons trying, or being coerced into trying, to fly.
Tintaglia and IceFyre make an appearance, attacked by humans working for The Duke of Chalced who needs medicine made from dragon parts to live.
Selden is being sold, seen as an invaluable dragon man freak. However, I think there was little development of his story from book one through to the start of book four.
I remember Selden having a stronger character in the Liveships trilogy, but in this quartet, it seems his distinctiveness has been neglected.
I think this could have been a trilogy with tighter pacing (and less repetitive, leading no where whining from both humans and dragons).
Definitely the weakest of the Rain Wild Chronicles, maybe of The Real of the Elderlings. Too many dragons, and I found myself wanting to skip to Malta's POV constantly, since her plot is the most interesting and her and Reyn are just lovely
