Once again, thank goodness for Robin Hobb's prose in propelling me through the Rain Wild Chronicles. While City of Dragons was somewhat more enjoyable than the previous installment, it was still frustrating and doesn't bring me to have any emotional connection with the characters. In fact, I have become less interested in Alise and Thymara with this installment. Can't put a finger on why for Alise—perhaps there being fewer perspectives for her—but for Thymara, it's simply such a shame to me that the majority of her arc revolves around this off-putting debacle among the Rain Wilders in claiming a mate. I can't stand it anymore. Yeah, they're teenagers, I understand that. But this ongoing conflict just reads incredibly immature for my taste. Things like this are why I'm continuously preferring an adult cast of characters in my fantasy novels.

Anyway, I did still enjoy Sedric and Carson with their limited page-time. As did I enjoy the discovering of
Kelsingra and it's Elderling magic
. I also quite enjoyed Leftrin's journey and a reunion with
Malta and Reyn
were. Great to see more of those two. Additionally, I appreciate the shorter length of this book; it gave the impression of more fluid pacing.

Onto the final book in this series, finally.

although i do enjoy how the main storyline of these chronicles has expanded in this instalment, some of the characters are really starting to become insufferable to me!!!!!! and hey, i love a flawed character!!!!!! i am fond of an asshole!!!!! they’re usually my faves. and i usually adore how hobb writes them! but i like to see some… growth? sintara and thymara were a challenge for me this book. i’ve grown weary of them. they feel repetitive. if thymara loses her shit about jerd’s hot girl summer one more time i will scream. and i get it, she’s hurt and repressed and ashamed and jealous and horny and confused and desiring and independent and every rule she’s ever had is unraveling right in front of her but we’re three books in now and we’ve not seemed to make any progress from book one and when we do make progress she immediately takes three steps back the MOMENT I EVEN THINK OF WARMING TO HER. MOVE ON, SUCK A DICK, PRACTICE POLYAMORY IF YOU WANT, LET THINGS GO!
anyway, love hobb. love a hobb finale. so let’s goooooooo! let’s practice some sexual acts that don’t lead to pregnancy!! but let’s not lick cocktail sausages as a prelude to those acts in future!!!! and most importantly, let’s revive this city and have the duke die miserably!!!! wooooooo!
