Boring. I get that this series was supposed to be two books and the publisher made Hobb stretch it to four, but it really could have been 1 book.

Still didn’t love this one. Sure, everyone is fucking. Felt a lot faster than the first two but at what cost? I think I would prefer 400 pages of dragon inner monologues

I liked exploring the city, though some descriptions were repetitive. I also enjoyed Alise and the introduction of a conflict about their right to use the city. Bellin also had a good moment at the end, which I liked. The revelation that Leftrin and Reyn are cousins wasn’t surprising worldbuilding wise, most of the major Trader families must be related by now (which was mentioned in one of the Liveship Trader books). But the addition about Tarman saving the baby because of that blood relation felt awfully sudden and I wish there was more foreshadowing.
Thymara’s plotline started frustrating me the most. This book has a lot of repetition about things likethe keepers not being allowed to have relationships, liveship lore we already know, the Rain Wilds having poorer houses in the high branches… New POVs are introduced, but I think the POVs should’ve been one of the keepers or hunters. Every other character besides Thymara do nothing, with Alise’s conflict over the city never amounting to anything. The romance conflict has dragged on for too long. I get why Tats would feel led on and that Thymara has trauma from her father’s rules, but I wish there would be more focus on Thymara and Sintara’s relationship. Sedric seems miserable the entire time and I don’t understand why Hobb even gave him a dragon in the first place.
Hest’s POV added nothing new as well. We already know about Chalced. The addition that his mother thinks he can do no wrong and never punished him while his father disapproves of him was similar to Sedric’s backstory. I’m surprised no one told the author that that was a bad idea. Malta’s conflict was not solved at all, and I don’t understand why she had to be added. I also don’t like how her and Reyn talked about their old courtship in Liveship Traders. They had a conversation about how forbidden and seductive it was when they kissed behind Reyn’s veil, and Malta alludes to missing the silly girl she was etc, but I still remember that Malta was 13 and had no idea what she was doing. As for the Duke of Chalced, the chapters were interesting but very minimal.
