I guess I knew all along that Sutter and this book would end up disappointing me. I don't fault the author though - I congratulate him for duping me into caring about his lost cause. It is reminiscent of my own childhood with parents who drink. You care about them and try to make them see where their life is headed but it's like the volume is turned way down low. I'm curious if the movie ends up happily.... Anyway, it was a good book but it's a story you already know if you have any alcoholics in your family.

The Spectacular Now is one of those strikingly rare stories that always disappoints you in the end. No matter who reads it or how many times it is read, the ending never fails to break your heart. Not because of a weak plot or poor writing, but because the lovably flawed protagonist can’t help but be who they are. Had four stars until the end...

I was pleasantly surprised by this book because I generally don't prefer books by male authors. I was feeling it until the last few pages. He lost me with that vague ending. I feel like I want to watch the movie to see how it's interpreted on there.

This book only cares about the now, like the title says. There is a development to Sutter throughout the story, a long with everybody else, you see them grow up. However, Sutter chooses to stay his course, and it is incredibly sad. The ending does not show us what happens to him, although at that last bar scene, you get a glimpse of what is waiting for him... maybe.
The only positive takeaway I have from this story is that there is always more to a person than what we see. Everything else is super sad, especially because it tends to be true.
