Wow! Just wow... This book is spectacular

This was a very quick and enjoyable read. I feel the author did a good job with narrating in a teenage boy's voice compared to some that I have read. The distubing thing about this book is the complete incompetence of Sutter and Aimee's parents, but since there are parents out there like that, I feel it was fairly realistic as to what can happen when a child has no parental guidance.

I really, really enjoyed The Spectacular Now and I wish that I would have known that it was a book before I saw the movie. I feel like that's what made it fall a little short of amazing for me.

Sutter Keely has to be one of the best fictional characters in any book that I've read. This has to be at least partially because he's the narrator and the voice in this book is incredible! Also, there's so much depth to him. At the beginning all I could think was, "Man, he can really throw back some alcohol," but by the end I was proud of all of the progress he made. Tharp kept digging deeper into Sutter's past and circumstances and really fleshed him out.

I was also impressed with all of the relationships in the book. Sometimes I feel like authors try too hard to show you how messed up the main character is by making their relationships dysfunctional beyond reason, but all of them were believable and even relatable.

Honestly, I can't think of anything bad to say about this book.

This book gave me a lot of feelings. Sutter was such a interesting character that you kind of hated but wanted him to so badly sort his life out.

Can I just say that I actually visualised him as miles teller (who played him in the movie) I enjoyed his book on holiday and I enjoyed the film just as much :)

Tharp tells the charming coming-of-age story of Stutter Keely with surprisingly honest and resonating prose. The Spectacular Now falls somewhere in between trashy, nonsensical YA garbage and novel, believable gold.

My absolute favourite aspect of this novel was its relatable characters, ranging from asshole-to-the-world-but-an-actual-darling protagonist Stutter to intelligent-and-naive romantic interest Aimee. I loved the conversational exchanges between everyone in the book because of how real it felt.

My biggest issue with the piece of writing, however, was its rather disconcerting writing style. It's almost like it's amazing because of how normal it was to read, but it also felt rather arresting (in a bad way) for this very reason.

Other than that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Halfway through reading it, I experienced a plethora of emotions due to the resonance of Aimee's character, and how utterly and innocently Sutter had such an impact on her life. I found it beautiful the way both had taught each other things they otherwise would never have learnt and how both were able to discover courage from each other.

THE VERDICT: An enjoyable read with forgivable faults, but faults nontheless.
dark emotional funny sad tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

Man. This was well-written, but ultimately left me feeling kind of empty. Sutter is a charming protagonist, but lost- I wished I could I save him from himself. Really beautiful prose and engaging characters, though.
