Just After Sunset

The standout of these stories is "N".  It's about a patient N who may be suffering from OCD and paranoia (as diagnosed by his psychiatrist) because he believes a circle of stones in Ackerman's Field contains a doorway between his reality and another reality in which dwells a monster named Chtun.  Chtun is most likely to break through when the viewer sees seven stones when there are actually eight stones, leading to an obsession with numbers: odd numbers are bad, prime numbers are worse, even numbers are safe, etc.

It's been a while since I read King. But this compilation of stories made me remember why I like his work so much. From one extreme to the next, he keeps surprising me in the most unexpected ways.
N, Mute and The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates were my favourites.

Willa   -    3✨
Not exactly what I expected, but that's King for you. He always takes the road less traveled.
I'd be interested to see what happened to the ones who chose not to go with Willa and David.
I liked that in the notes King declares himself a romantic, it only shows up a little in his work.

The Gingerbread Girl   -   4✨
The scary thing is, this could so easily be a true story. King just has this gift when it comes to writing female characters and how differently we all grieve. And then of course he will add the horror just to seal the deal.

Harvey's Dream   -   2✨
Precognitive dreams, I've seen it done better.
Actually, I've seen King doing it better, but in His later works. This might have been his stepping stone.

Rest Stop  -   3✨
"Because under the right circumstances, anyone could end up anywhere, doing anything."
Could you talk yourself into doing something you'd normally never would? Or would you need an alternate person to do it?
An interesting concept I'll be thinking about.

The things they left behind  -  2✨
I didn't like this one.
Adding the sexual aspects to lighten the mood (I assume that was the idea) just didn't work for me. I think the story could have been better without it. Giving it the serious tone the subject deserves.

Graduation Afternoon  -  2✨
Not being an American makes me less anxious about things like this.
But with our government making decisions like supporting Russia; we might end up being a target one day. I honestly can't believe them.

N.    -    5✨
This is exactly why I'm a King fan

The Car from Hell   -   3✨
Reversed Animal cruelty... Is that even a thing.
Must say the last bit really grossed me out.

The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates  -   5✨
King just has this way to tell a story.
If only this was possible. There are a few people I'd like to talk to.

Mute  -  5✨
Just King can be this brilliant - honestly I've never came across anyone with his talent for short stories.

Ayana - 4✨
I think if you had a terminally ill loved one this story is something that definitely resonates.
It made me sad to remember the ones I've lost.
And the question of why some miraculous recovery, while others don't will always be contemplated.

A Very Tight Place - 3✨
Only King would think to make something this gross into a story, well more a horror. I think ever since I started reading his work he's added about a dozen fearful situations to my list of situations I don't want to find myself in.

Love, love, love King’s short story compilations and Just After Sunset does NOT disappoint. Ginger Bread Girl left me breathless and needing to step away for several days before continuing. And I really like show King explored the afterlife and ghosts - in ways I wasn’t used to reading from him.
A couple stories were only meh, but I thoroughly enjoyed a majority of this book!
