Such a heartwrenching and heartwarming story all at the same time. I must say that I am pissed that they made it into a movie. I guess they get to call the movie, "P.S. I love you" because they keep the main characters name, but I am pretty sure where the similarities end.
I feel that she did a great job of honestly showing what grief is like for those who lose a loved one. Granted I have not lost my spouse, but I have watched those that have lost spouses grieve. However, it portrays hope at the same time. Something that is hard to see when you are in the midst of despair.

Let me begin by saying that this was by no means a bad book. It was an enjoyable read, it just didn't resonate with me so much. People often say that the book is always better, but I've always found that sometimes books were destined to become movies. This is one of those books. The movie just makes me cry like no other, while the book makes me feel basically nothing. There were elements that made no sense to me, like random POVs from minor characters and the wishy-washy "romance" between Holly and Daniel. I'd still read it again though, as it's cute and fun.
Though I rarely ever say it, the movie was so much better than the book. The book and movie were quite different in context, in fact. The book was slow and had barely any back story.
I watched the movie, so I wanted to read the book to compare the two. The movie is much better! I think the book is about 100 pages too long. And except for character names & the fact that Holly's husband, Gerry, dies & her working through her grief, the movie is nothing like the book--thank goodness!

I wound up giving up on this one. Main character Holly’s voice is rambling and boring and desperately unfunny, and the story moves so slowly, if at all.
Maybe it's because I saw the movie before reading the book but I enjoyed the movie so much more. Holly was an annoying little dick in the book. She was so self pitying and selfish. She had her selfish moments in the movie but those were understandable. And getting her inner dialogue was probably just enhancing what she really felt, which WAS self pity, but I could have done without it. I wanted to strangle her half the time.
I was not a fan of the writing style either. I was just disappointed.
And having the movie in my head was not good for the way it was changed in the movie from the book. Especially Holly's relationship with Daniel. And Jeffrey Dean Morgan like where the hell was his character? I am a complete fangirl of his so I wanted to see him. And I was KINDA bummed that it was actually set in Ireland because one of my dreams is to visit Ireland and I really liked that Gerry set up their trip to Ireland. I could day dream with that. But, I guess living in Ireland is probably way cooler than visiting. So that's not really an actual complaint from me.
The notes seemed to lack any real emotion as well. I didn't feel sad at really any point. The movie had me in tears. And the movie had a lot of flashbacks to their relationship while the book had one (or two?). I missed that because it contributed to building the story and a picture of their relationship.
I will say that I really liked that Holly had a bigger family because I got to explore more characters that way. I liked the relationship between her and her brother Richard.
