It's taken me a long time to finish this book but that was down to having a baby and other hobbies. I loved this book so much and watching the film first didn't ruin the experience for me. Although that could be down to the fact that I watched the film years ago, but I think I would have loved them both equally the same. I will say though that when reading the book I couldn't picture Hillary Swank as Holly; the Holly in my mind was Emily Blunt.
emotional
I wanted to like this, I really did. Didn't happen. The premise was interesting, but the characters were like cardboard, the writing was amateurish, and Holly and Gerry's "great love" felt artificial and sort of unhealthy.
I'm a little sad. I had higher hopes.

I didn't really care for the style in which this book was written. It was kind of sweet - the story of a woman whose husband dies and leaves her some notes to open, once per month, as she heals from his death. I will admit, however, that the author tricked me. I thought I had figured out the ending to the book looong before it was over, but the author did the unexpected and I have some respect for her because of that.
I absolutely fell in love with this book! I'm not a fan of romantic novels, but my friend convinced me that it was different and to give it a shot. This book had me in tears the whole time. It was such an emotional journey and you connected so well with the character that you couldn't help but feel what she felt. Cecilia Ahern is always amazing with what she writes and I would recommend this book to everyone. BUT DO NOT WATCH THE MOVIE. It is horrible! It will completely ruin the book for you!

Gerry and Holly have been soul mates as children and continue to be in love as adults. Gerry has a brain tumor that only gives a little while to live. Before he dies he leaves Holly letters that will help her get through the grieving process, change her life and hopefully find the will to love again. What makes any rom-com work, especially ones that can make you cry, are the secondary characters. This is a great novel for when you need a little romance and a bit of a tear-jerker. It does have humour to keep it balanced - which is always nice on the ole emotions.
The book is WAY better than the movie and I LOVE the movie. I would read/watch them as separate entities. It is very different as the book takes place in Ireland and Holly has a big Irish family. I really like Holly's family. In the movie, I like the friendships and seeing Gerard Butler as Gerry (teeheehee).

I picked this up anticipating the movie (I "heart" Gerard Butler!). The book is quirky, cute, and funny and a pleasure to read.

The book is always better
I've been meaning to read this for a few years now but never got round to it. Seen the movie umpteen times but I finally read this and it was so so so much better than the movie. I never understand why they change things in movies but to change so much. Read this before if you never have and have never seen the movie.
