I haven't read any of the Artemis Fowl books before, so this was my first book with author Eoin Colfer. It was quite an interesting premise about an apparent boy genius who is a thief, but he is trying to thieve his way into fortune to start living the rest of his life without having to be a thief. Quite a confusing idea, and I felt torn. I wasn't sure if I was supporting Artemis or not since he was kidnapping, tricking, and stealing? I guess I'll need to read the actual book to get some more information because I feel like I was lacking a full understanding of the character without having read the actual novels.

MY REVIEW ON MY BLOG
Fan-TAS-tic.
Pictures are fantastic - the details not only tell the story along with the words but they ADD to the story, giving sense of place and sense of character superbly
It's been years since I read the original novel that I don't remember enough to compare the two, but I do get a sense that the Graphic Novel only includes barebones of the plot- which I guess is par for the course in the world of Graphic Novels - there's not an efficient way to include all of a 300+ page book with full pages of illustration/pictures. I would say that in some instances this is a drawback but this particular GN is so well done - I like being able to get a sense of place via illustration that it really evens out... But, it is somewhat like movie versions of books... there IS just a difference.
Being a lover of fonts AND visual organizational tools - I love that they used different fonts to organize the dialogue vs. narration vs. other sources of commentary and the two "main" characters: Artemis Fowl and Holly Short each talk in different fonts. It's all the small details like that which I highly value.
Did I mention that I loved it?

I don’t mind some aspects of the art style, but the magic of the fairies is missing when they all just look like humans. I miss the artwork and adaptation from the original set of graphic novels and am sad knowing we won’t be getting more of those. Here’s hoping they improve from here, but I don’t have high expectations.
