For a more in-depth DNF explanation I wholeheartedly agree with, I recommend reading @chellesofbooks's review.

I tried so hard to like this. I even put a second hold on it at the library when I couldn't make myself get through it with my first hold. But it's so. long. And its length is a significant detriment because nothing happens. I can't tell you a single plot point in depth, and I listened to almost an hour and a half of the book. The characters were flat and the magic system didn't seem to have any stakes. I couldn't do it anymore.

Curious Tides was not what I was expecting it to be. I was hopeful with the size of the book the world building, character development and plot would be on point. I unfortunately found the character development a little forced and the plot was a struggle. I do think that the world building was on point though. I found myself enthralled in how the magic system works in the book and the "good vs. Evil" thing they have going on.

Overall, the plot was TERRIBLY slow, and I wanted to reach inside the book and smack the FMC upside the head for about 50% of the book for her "woe is me" outlook on life. If you are a person who can get through 75% of a book before the plot picks up then I would recommend reading it purely for the ending, but if you need something to hold onto the entire time then this book is not for you.

Thank you NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for an ARC of the book. All opinions are my own.

Emory is a student at Aldryn College for Lunar Magics where people who possess magic can train and develop their powers. However, there is a caveat—each person who possesses magic can do so when the moon is in the right position for their magic; otherwise they need to resort to bloodletting.
Emory is back for her second year, but this year she needs to figure out how and why her best friend died. Who were the people with whom she had gotten closer? What do they know that she doesn't?
It's a year full of mystery and investigation for Emory. She'll have to join the popular crowd at school and a secret society and she'll need to realise her feelings for the two guys who make her heart beat—her best friend's older brother and the leader of the popular crowd.
However, the secrets that Emory discovers are devastating as they bring back more questions than answers about her past, especially about her mother.

This YA novel was full of adventure and mystery since the beginning. I didn't always liked Emory as I thought she was being dumb quite a few times (especially when the boys were involved), but I could see her grow throughout the book. I'm curious to see what book 2 will bring and the answers about Emory's past.

DNF@3 hours.

Oof. So much info dumping about a complex magic system with one wet blanket FMC and one kinda decent MMC whom share a deceased loved one.
The pacing was just so incredibly slow and I couldn’t get into it.

This book is fascinating.

From the lore and worldbuilding to the layers of the characters, it's nigh-perfection. Even the predictability worked in its favor, because I was genuinely guessing my way through this one, with a sort of suspense to what would happen.
