Extreme creativity at work. Definitely one of the more fantastically composed books I've ever had the pleasure of reading. Mitchell had me hooked and I'm eager to dive into another novel by him.

It's been praised and panned for its intricate structure. The book is a series of interlocking stories, and some of the stories are more compelling than others. However, overall, I really enjoyed it.

I really thoroughly enjoyed this book. Not only was it a clever theme it was uniquely well executed. I am in awe of Mitchell's ability to write such vastly different stories and then still manage to weave them into a single book. I didn't like the middle chapter very much mostly because I found the language really hard to follow and found myself having to read it aloud. No reading should be quite that difficult. This book was excellent but not life changing for me. After much hype I think it's a solid 4 but not a 5 for me.

I had to think quite thoroughly about what I thought of this book. I initially approached it with certain expectations, thinking that the stories that form the novel are all interconnected in some gigantic, centuries-spanning conspiracy that would blow my mind. That was not the case.

See, the stories were all connected through ideas and thoughts (and quite a few physical objects), all seen through the lens of existential reincarnation, and while that was somewhat less enthralling at the beginning, it gets more and more interesting the closer you get to the end, culminating in a few conclusions that cause you to sit back and ponder - amongst many things - the purpose of humanity and the power of fate versus choice.

As for the actual writing, the book is superb, achieving the immensely difficult task of telling 6 different yet related stories, each in a different voice, using different dialects and age-appropriate vocabulary. The mind simply boggles at the amount of work that went into it. Furthermore, the stories are all interesting and attention-grabbing, and they never overstay their welcome nor feel rushed. It is quite simply a literary feat.

So, if you're in the mood for a different sort of novel, pick this up. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

At first I was confused ...why did the journal end mid-sentence? And the next page was something completely different?! I couldn't quite figure out what type of book I was reading, so I just delved in deeper and deeper. I looked for phrases, names to link one narrative to the previous story, and tried to understand how it all fit. It was a fun little mystery of sorts.
What was frustrating as a reader, was that by the time I was pretty invested in each narrative, it ended right as something big happened or was about to happen. It was hard to reboot and absorb the next story, but each was entertaining and fascinating.
This is a hard book to explain, but it was entertaining and fun to read. I loved the different tones and narratives. And I'm very curious to see how this is handled in the movie...

3.5 stars but rounded up to 4 for ingenuity. I found it hard to listen/follow sometimes but worth it for how it pays off structurally.

Just. So crazy good. So many varying interwoven stories. Beautiful prose, and wonderfully distinct voices.
