I stumbled across this book during the last weekend trip in Helsinki. I couldn’t resist the promise of revising the feeling in the original “Dracula”. To my delight, the doomed atmosphere in this book is exactly the same. It also includes multiple first person perspectives. It’s about how Bram Stoker discovered his monster.
Bram was a sickly child and seemed to survive because his nanny Ellen saves him. He eventually got startling healing abilities. There was something odd about Ellen though - the color of her eyes would change and Bram’s sister Matilda, a talented artist, could not capture her likeness. The children start to follow their nanny and discover many disturbing and inexplicable things.
The second half of the book, set when the siblings are adults, sets out to explain and explore what they saw. It’s a fascinating story in its own right. Definitely set in the same era as the original and still completely different.
I loved this book. It gave me the same creeping foreboding as “Dracula” while providing a unique and unexpected storyline with a set of characters you root for and fear.

Fantastic. I think I enjoyed it more than the original Dracula, it’s definitely far better than Dacre’s first attempt with “Dracula: The Un-Dead”. My only complaint is the ending was somewhat open with some characters and story left unresolved.

Clearly the ability to write a good novel has not been passed down through the Stoker DNA…
