A powerful message for young readers: just when you feel like an eternal spectator to events you can't fully comprehend, you may have a chance--a responsibility--to act, be brave, and stand up for what's right.

A reread of a childhood favorite.

Lois Lowry can tell a good story.

A novella about a young Danish girl and her family risking everything to help their Jewish neighbours during World War II.

I read this as a child, and while I didn’t fully grasp the extent of what was happening, I knew enough to recognize Annemarie’s bravery and the risks her family was taking.
Reading it again as an adult, with a deeper understanding of the true danger they faced, I appreciate and admire the story even more.
