Beginning good. Ending ok. Middle confusing and frustrating. I like a good mystery but there were too many characters they were trying to tie together with really no need. I really wanted to like it. But three stars feels generous.

Do you ever read a book that you think you hate but then you like? I was like, Oh this is so dumb, when I read the opening murder scene description. It made it sound like it was going to be all about lewd sex crime stuff. It was not! It was about writing and how this woman faked her own death while on the top floors of the world trade towers in 2001, and then gives her books to a friend and makes an escape and lives far away. and there is an investigation happening in the present, you know, 20 YEARS LATER, where a journalist with a past hooks up with a detective who lives on an island but comes back for trauma group every year to re open the case but really she just wants to get her FAMILY MEMBER out of the states for past crimes.
I was pleasantly surprised to read this even though the writing felt basic. Like you were hit over the head with a bunch of the same details so you REALLY UNDERSTOOD that the woman is good at remembering coffee orders. yes, got it.

I wanted to like this book more than I did. Unfortunately, I never felt the urge to pick it up and had no problem putting it down. I kept waiting for it to get better. While some of the final plot twists were unexpected, I never felt truly shocked, which is something I look forward to in suspenseful novels.

There were numerous storylines happening simultaneously, with frequent shifts between past and present events. Personally, I didn’t care much for the author's writing style.

Overall, this book was more of a 3.5/5 stars for me.
