Sigh... I’m so frustrated with how short these books are because all I can think about is how much better it could be if there was more. Seanan McGuire sets each of these books up with so much story to be told and I feel like we only get a fraction. The nonsense worlds especially need more detail and explanation for me to grasp, personally.

The representation in this series if phenomenal and all of these characters seem to have great personalities, but yet again there isn’t enough time to connect to them to care about them or the plot or what happens to them.

In the past two books I did feel a little more connected with the characters and the story which is why I’m dropping this one to a 2 star, because I just couldn’t make myself care while reading this.

Clearly from the rave reviews, this is a me issue. I see why this series is so beloved. I might have to call it a day and say that this series isn’t for me. I love a lot of character work and world building in my fantasy and I feel like this series lacks that.

You might catch me reading In An Absent Dream though, because I’m very curious to see why that one is so hyped.

Since I ADORED the first two books, this one being 3-stars feels disappointing. But 3-stars is still a good book so idk why I'm freaking out about it! I think the eerie, spooky, dark elements I ate up in the first two weren't really there with this one. It felt a little too whimsical for me (I'm clearly more of a logical world type of girlie) and the plot was also a little scrambled.

Obviously continuing on in the series regardless, but this one is certainly my least favorite.

I'm still finding my footing in this series, but I think reading them so far apart may be doing them a disservice. They are excellent and perfect and beautifully wonderful as I read them, but completely dissolve from my brain once I close the covers. I enjoy the ensemble casts and think the books have lovely and important messages, but I feel like I should maybe be taking more away from them than I do.

Re-Read in 2023
I actually really like this one now and don’t get my old complaints lol

I really liked this book as I do with every book in the Wayward chlildren series. But I didn't like it as much as "Every Heart A Doorway" and "Down Among To Stick And Bones" which is why my actual rating is more a 3.5
But why? That's extremely easy to answer: I'm not a fan of nonsense worlds at. all. In the first two books I found the idea of a nonsense world fantastic! A world with rainbows to walk on and everything is made of candys? Yes please! But now after reading it I realised I'm not a nonsense person. I always wanted to have an explanation and often described the story as something "that doesn't even make sense"... Yeah such an irony... In a nonsense world a strory that doesn't make sense? Unbelievable!!!1!!!
So all in all the story and writing were extremely good but I just had a constant headache as I tried to get the nonsense/story, which unfortunately lowered my enjoyment a little bit.

Very heartwarming fantasy - cutesy, whimsical with a bit of darkness.

3.5 rounded up to 4

Goodreads really need to add the 1/2 star functionality - geesh.
