Free Nook Book
I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. It's set in Africa and describes the racist views of the different regions. The main characters became easy to like and the book kept my interest with lots of action. Not a typical read, but I would recommend!

This book was very forgetful, Deon has some really greats books out there, this one wasn't one of them.

Totally worth the $1.99 on Amazon's Daily Kindle Deal. Some people might say it's a little preachy about animal rights in Africa, I thought it added to the story and character development. I will read more by Mr. Meyer.

Nice thriller. Murder, conspiracy, in various safari parks. Main focus is the biases and prejudices of the protagonist, and how he has to overcome them to solve the mystery.

The sole reason I picked up this book was because I wanted to read a book set in Africa for a reading challenge. I found the audiobook edition of this via the Oneclick Digital app, downloaded the book and pressed play. I adored the narrator, Saul Reichlin. His South African accent was perfectly suited to the novel and did a fantastic job of differentiating the characters using tone and dialect. There is a bit of something for everyone: politics, action, romance, mystery.

Trigger warnings: violence, gun violence, car accident, snake attack, probably other stuff but it's late and I'm tired and my brain is mush.

I read and LOVED Deon Meyer's Fever back at the start of the year, so when I saw that my library had more of his books I figured it was about time I picked them up. And this was...fine? It still did a great job of capturing the intricacies and political complications of South Africa. It was still a compelling and gripping story. It still had solid characters that I cared about.

But it was REALLY long (over 500 pages long) and I.......yeah, there were times when I found it confusing because we were over 400 pages in and suddenly something from the first 50 pages became relevant again and I didn't remember what it was.

Still, it was engaging and fast paced, so.........what more can you ask?

Lekker down to earth.

I listened to this via audiobook. The reader was very good, with (as far as I know) various South African accents and intonation that gave the story a human, authentic touch.

I found the novel interesting in background and in Lemmer's unique perspective, but the plot was meandering and quite confusing in places. I couldn't get a clear sense of what was happening for stretches at a time, the names blurred together (but the unique accents the reader gave them helped somewhat), and there was several iteration of endings.

I also hated the clichéd ending. Of course he would run toward the car in his driveway, pfft, like the final 5 minutes of a sentimental romantic movie.

This book is translated from Afrikaans and is the first in a series featuring Lemmer the bodyguard.

I do admit I felt a little weird about reading it in English once I realised it had been translated, because I can read Afrikaans and I almost felt I should be reading it as the author wrote it. The English translation has been done well.

This is a good, solid action/mystery set in South Africa. Although Lemmer is based in the Western Cape, most of the action happens in Mpumulanga. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how it would end (the best part, for me, about a mystery/thriller) and second-guessing myself and my assumptions. I really enjoyed the first two thirds, but found the ending a little dry in a way.

This is a decent holiday read and I'll definitely try another Deon Meyer if I can find it. Perhaps in Afrikaans this time? :P
